Not sure what you mean by "flare", but if its a jerky/rough gear change that can be caused by a failed/faulty MAF sensor.
The auto on our D2 is beginning to flare when changing from 2nd to 3rd.
It started doing it about 1000kms ago.
I changed fluid and filter 5000 kms ago just before driving up here to Darwin for holidays.
I've searched the forums by every combination of keywords I can think of, but can't find anything about it.
Any suggestions, and anyone here in Darwin I can take it to?
Thanks,
Ian

Not jerky or rough.
It changes slowly into 3rd, and the revs increase while it is getting there.
It used to be immediate and silky-smooth change before. Other changes are fine.

What was the condition of the fluid when you did a fluid change? Was it an unhealthy dark brown burnt look or was it a healthy deep red colour?
If your transmission is flaring between gear changes, it could be bad news, coz you might need a new transmission, sorry to say! These ZF gearboxes either work properly or have issues and need to be repaired or replaced.

It was brown, but not dark and didn't smell burnt.

Hmm, brown isn't a good colour for ATF....
You might have to do a few more fluid drops to get the colour back to the reddish pink condition, because each drain from the pan only removes about 1/3 of the fluid, with the rest trapped in the torque converter, oil cooler and lines.
But perhaps the damage has already been done, and you may have damaged clutch packs, which is why the revs are flaring up between gear changes...![]()

search for geaboxes and the thread was started by syntrx and continued by me (dagz)
i have what sounds to be the same issue and at this stage it doesnt look good.
if you get flaring after a fluid change odds are its bad news....
on older band braked units it would indicate time for a band adjustment as the new "sliperier" oil would lubricate better. in a clutch pack auto it means you either need to get an overhaul if you are unlucky OR the pressure regulator is sticking which means the box needs some work and a decent clean out.
If you're lucky its the latter and a really really good flushing might sort out the sticking pressure regulator.
