    TD5 Fuel Pump crapped out :( @ 200k

Well it finally happended. My pump pumped no more. I noticed a loss of power after ducking out for a case of beer and on the way home the poor girl had no go.

I got home and checked all the usuals including the turbo but no joy. After replacing the fuel filter as a last resort, the pump failed to run on startup and she ran out of fuel.

Pump is out, access hole in cargo carpet is now cut and new pump on its way from the UK. Just thouight I would share the pain. I shall post a photo of the access hole in the carpet for interest sake shortly. I have a cargo mat permanently installed so a hole is no issue. I shall also advise the results of the online purchase. The pump was just over 100 GBP plus postage.

For the record 206k km's on the clock. No signs of algae on the filter. Old unit looked fined on removal. Some black crap on the filter but not a lot.

Rumour is yes but there are stories of fuel line damage.

The access panel is handy, just takes a bit of interior work to get at it. I wouldn't want to do it in the middle of nowhere. Once open the process is quite easy.

    so how do Td5's work?

theres an in-tank pump, then a lift pump, [via cooler] then injection?

why is diesel so much trouble to pump?

No, just an intank pump. Straight to the injectors, which are UNIT injectors ... develop injection pressure (25,500psi in the D2a) as they have a plunger in the top, which is driven by the camshaft in the head ... then fuel return to the tank via a fuel cooler.

    Much better than V8's ....

    Td5 pump

Thats good going for one of those, best not to let the tank go below a quarter so the pump has fuel around it for cooling.,I take a spare on long trips just in case!

Just on that note, ive got an intermittant prob with my disco that it seems to have a slight miss esp when in low rev or reversing slowly letting the clutch out, although it comes and goes. Just when you think you've found the prob, example oil in harness it seems to come back. Just wondering if I can do a fuel test as ive run the tank right down a few times, maybe the pump is shotdy???
The disco has done 238,000 but still has heaps of go .
    cheers bronson

Have also noticed on my Nanocome that cyclinder 5 has an inbalance of about -8 whilst the rest are around 2, dunno.........
