Roof rail removal and roof rack gutter brackets
I am planning to build a roof rack.
1) Is removing the D2 roof rails a simple job? What is necesary for this to be done(eg. does the entire roof lining have to come out?)
2) Are there any aftermarket gutter brackets or clamping system suitable for aluminium that is reasonably cheap.
I have priced the name brands specializing in 4X4 and it appears that their bracket systems are worth 1/2 of the price of one of the roof racks they sell. I don't want the whole bracket from gutter to roof rack, just the gutter clamp as such.
Does anyone have close up pics/description of their homemade alloy roof rack gutter clamps? I am good at copying other peoples handywork, I just don't have a clamping system that I feel confident with at the moment.
Cheers,
Jason

You dont need to remove the roof rails to put on a rack!?
However, to answer your question, the roof rail nuts are recessed into a supprt brace in the roof. You need to be able to lower the roof liner enough to get a socket in there. You might get away with dropping the front, and sides back to the two rear door trims, but you definitely will need to do the front sun visor, overhead cargo tray, jesus handles, and front row seat belt trim.
Then you need to be able to seal up the holes that remain.... I guess you should be able to find a suitable grommet, and maybe apply a little silicon sealant under it. Probably spray some fish oil or similar inside just to be safe.
