    V8 2004 Disco

    Hi all.
Have already done a search to the following questions to no avail, so I have to ask.

Have already a 96TDi Disco but looking to up-grade.....as we all do one day.
Looking at a Classic 2004 V8 with auto, raised 50mm with 140,000 on the clock.
Having checked fuel consumption is it true to those that own them, high
22lt per 100 around town, 14-16lt on the road???.
Any idea of fuel for towing, understand "towing" can mean anything from a jet ski to a 40ft off-roader caravan but any comments???
Is it true that the auto has to come out for an oil change???
Has anyone had any real drama's with the electrics. ie fuel injection ect.
Not worried about oil leaks take this Landrover as being like all others that "leak" slightly

Well guys and girls thanks for your time, I appologise if these topics have been milled arounf before/prior.

    Cheers Paul.

    V8

    Paul

Your source is most likely Redbook which is wrong.

I have a 2003 V8 with about 110k on the clock. More of a soccer mum's car than anything else.

Does between 16 - 17 litre /100 around town and I haven't tried it on the highway yet but expect between 700 - 800 km per tank. (90 litre tank). If you flogged the preverbal out of it in sports mode you would hit the 22 litre /100 km

Generally a good car. Biggest issue is 3 amigos but easily fixed and if you were purchasing the car from someone who had no idea about 3 amigos you could really talk it up to reduce the price. (they probably deserve it as they are obviously not a part of this forum).

Not sure about the towing side as I have done very minimal (at the moment).

Anyhow look in the Discovery 2 section of this forum for issues relating to the D2. Fair bit of the preverbal in that as well.

    Regards
    Andrew

    Paul,

I have a 2002 V8 Auto (122,000km) and I drive 110km every day to and from work. In the past 12 months since purchase I have travelled 44,000km, in North QLD service every 10,000km and oil change every 5,000km, now back in Brisbane and just service every 10,000km.

On the highway I currently get 15.6l/100km @ 100-110km/hr with mud tyres, bullbar, bash plates, lift and rack but this is slightly out due to the larger tyres and the odometer not being correct as a result.

In the peak hour traffic if I nurse it I will get 550km before the fuel light comes on (again odometer incorrect so more likely 600km)

If I drive hard or tow a big load with a lot of stop / start then more likely 400km before the light comes on.

With a small to medium load on long distance highway (Seadoo RXP and gear) fuel consumpton hardly changes.

I have found just under 100km/hr fuel consumption is good (better than other big petrol 4wds) but if you push the speed up you are trying to push a big square box.

Auto stays in for oil change (as far as I know) and minor service costs me around $300 and last major service with all fluids flushed, auto service etc. was around $700.

Only electric issue I have had is the Amber ACE light will come on, however restart the ignition and it goes away.

I have had to replace most seals on the engine and gearbox etc. but I think this is a given for a vehicle coming up to 10 years old.

    Hope this helps.

Remember the Turbo Diesel may be a lot better on fuel but it costs a lot more. I paid under $20,000 for my V8 at ES spec with full leather, ACE, SLS etc.

I'm not trying to be arguementative but I'd like to see a V8 auto Disco 2 that can get 700 to 800 k's out of a standard size tank of petrol. It might be possible if you drove at 80 kph on the freeway, but who drives all day long at that speed?

I live in the country and do most of my driving on freeways or back country roads and if I get 600 k's out of a tank of fuel I feel pretty happy.

26 / 27 litres per hundred is about right for a V8 Disco towing a heavy (2.5 ton) Caravan. The diesel TD5's are better at towing and are more economical then V8's but now having driven a Td5 Disco (only last weekend) for the first time I must admit I much prefer my V8 to the Td5 diesel anyday and now would not consider buying a Td5 if the one I drove is representative of your average Td5.

I'm not against diesels, I also own a 2006 Ssangyong Rexton and if it was practical, which is not, I'd have the SsangYong's 2.7 diesel with its five speed auto in a Disco any day to the TD5. The Ssangyong is smooth much more powerful and far quieter then the old Landy engine I hate to admit.

I have driven 7 D2's and D2a's over the last year, roughly 50% of each and while some here may not agree with me on this I will say it none the less the D2a's drive much better then the D2's for some reason. If you can get one with ACE then you will be very happy indeed. My D2a is a HSE and it is just about the most comfortable vehicle I have ever driven especially if you drive long distances.

    cheers,
    Terry

02 d2 v8 manual. 31inch tyres bullbar LPG tanks roof rack. Gets 16l per 100 in and out to Brisbane from the burbs - 25k each way through busy roads. That comes down to 10l per 100k on LPG if comparing costs to petrol. Tows the 2 ton vagabond well. I have driven several td5's and d2 and d2a's and have no regrets for what I do.

    Cheers

    Challenge Time

    Terry

I'm heading to Sydney from Brisbane at Christmas time so it'll be the first time I'll empty the tank. I have driven out west (Surat etc) but it then becomes a bit of more a challenge if I push the limits out there. Even walking down some of the property entrances can be a day out there.

Around town I get roughly 530 out of a tank (This is driving in Brisbane across the river twice a day, stop and go, minor hard breaking as needed along with some foot planting). If I can't get 650 I'd be very surprised so I'm going to push for 700. (Might be literally).

The Sydney trip should test it as some of it is 110km/hr so I'll be doing 119km/hr. Similiar for the 100km zones.

Also my car is all stock and weighs about 2040 kg. Not as heavy as some other rigs. (Will have the Family as cargo).

    I'll keep you posted.

    Regards
    Andrew

    I've just taken delivery of a D2 2001 V8 ES.
I am off to Perth (1600K) in mid October to have a replacement long range (140lt), plus a sub tank (50lt) installed, as well as getting the Amigos sent out of town.
This will be the first long trip so I'll be getting fuel figures at various speeds to determine range. As each fuel point is not less than 250K apart and major towns are 670...550 and 470 k apart, I should be able to get good numbers. The hope is to need only 1 stop on the way back???

If you get the ES it will have 8" wide rims as opposed to 7", this will increase the fuel consump.

I have 8" rims with AT tyres and roof rack plus 2" lift on my 1999 V8 and get around 20l/100 driving 35k each way through Melbourne, lots of stop/go but mainly stop. I recently got 18l/100 driving at 110kmh all day (900k) but the car was loaded up (pic).

I think you would find the roof rack with all the gear up there would have seriously affected your fuel consumption especially at 110 kph.

The V8's are pretty good even loaded up when your on the freeway at a steady speed. Still if you haven't got enough room then you have to put the gear somewhere.

    cheers,
    Terry
