i ll paint the story for you 4wding with my brother(d1 tdi) and brother in law (b2600 bravo), muddie hill brother goes up fine bit slip nothing to write home about, i try and go up in my d2 td5 get stuck, brother in law said it because the traction control keeps cutting in stopping me getting enough run to get up the hill, i think its because my brothers d1 has a cdl,
the end of the story is my brothers d1 towing my d2 to the top of the hill, which resulted with my brother having a good time bagging me out
oh mine is 01 discovery 2 td5 2" lift and bfg a/t s 265/75/16
any thoughts?

tyres= brand new
pressure= come to think about bit high for off road any way
driving abilty= ........ low (brother in laws med to high he couldn't get it out)
line= couldn t get good one kept sliding into same old line
Sounds like you have the D2 "lite" without a working CDL (centre diff lock). Search the forum about how to fit one. Makes ALL the difference. Traction control is no use at all in a hill climb without a CDL. Can also lead to flipping the vehicle in reverse.

Re traction control:
Were you applying throttle to engage the traction control, or backing off when you seemed to loose traction?
Not sure but I have seen some drivers get nowhere when traction control cuts in, cause of all the funny noises etc they back off and the TC turns off. If they gave it a bit of a boot it would get up the slope, noises and all.

With TC - giving it the boot makes revs your friend. Definitely the CDL will make a big difference but the TC kicking in will not slow your momentum as it is the wheel that is not driving and spinning that is being braked.
Your lack of progress was caused by drive switching from the front wheels to the rears etc and vice versa caused by an open CDL making your vehicle a one wheel drive at best and most likely a no wheel drive if revs were dropped so the TC did not work.

I have seen that (almost flipping and spinning around!)....differential action just when you DONT want it.
As for tyres = new...what were the tyres on the D1 - what type and tread pattern...that can make all the difference.
As said above, the ETC needs gas to get it going - and low range selected. It also requires the braking system to be in good condition.
Having said all of that the CDL lock up makes all the difference up hill in loose stuff. If you dont have the nipple just get a D1 output housing and fit her up.
