Tristan it sounds like its just down to centre diff then (an auto will creep up a hill better than a manual but I assume they were both autos..most are).
The nipple is the external bolt that if twisted will lock in the centre diff...you can see it if its on the box - feel it more so with your fingers. Have a look at the transfer case number on the case and then google transfer case serial number and Centre Diff and there is a site where you can look it up to see if its got the centre diff lock internals. If its 01 build it will not have it most likely. If you search on this site you will see where I have posted about fitting up my 01 build 02 complianced D2 with CDL.

G'day Tristan and welcome to the forum mate.
A d2 with a CDL is completely different beast to an unlocked d2.
Asking why your brother got up a hill and you didn't, or why you got stuck, when no one was there, with details like "got stuck" is like saying, please explain women to me.
i.e. impossible to give a useful answer or definitive explanation
As others have said, it could be, bad line, skill, air pressure, lack of revs, too many revs, tyres, gear selection, undie selection, etc, etc.
In terms of CDL, do a search on here of D2 cdl, and look in the Good Oil, there's a wealth of information there.
Good Luck

This is a good one showing what ETC AND CDL can do versus say a rangie with bigger tyres and no traction control - [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elU2e7ZnNz8"]YouTube - El Hill Los Coyotes[/nomedia]

Tristan, welcome to the forum, full of good info & helpful people
As for the D2,i have had one without the CDL,&the one i have now has it factory fit,MY 03.Having the CDL is better, but you should also do pretty well without it.I have also been out a lot with my brother that has a manual V8 D1.I have always been able to keep up with him in either of the D2's i have had.The one with CDL will leave him for dead occasionally.Where he needs a rush up a slope, mine will crawl up slowly, not flicking rocks out everywhere.
As others have said you need to check tyre pressures & keep on the loud pedal, try not to back off,& try to pick a good line. The more times you go out doing this type of thing, the better you will get.
My brother has a lot more experience than me,& i have learnt a lot from him,& i am still learning.
He lived on Cape York for 10yrs,lucky buggar...
Good luck

Good post above. Yep I should have said that for 7 years or so I was very happy with JUST traction control. Even deep sand and heavy towing in deep sand it did well..but it has to be working properly and ETC has to be really driven and it takes time to get used to it.

Its simple. apples with apples
If he has AT's, did you have AT's, or did you have road tyres?
Second, did the hill require momentum, ie speed, to get up, or were you both trying to crawl it.
If it was speed, the yes the TC will rob you in your initial take off, as it grabs the excessivley spinning wheels. If you and your bro were crawling it, then the TC should have the time to give you the power on the wheel that needs it.
As the others said, the CDL does make the whole thing so much easier as the TC is only having to work on two wheels at any given time, instead of three.
All other things being equal, the D2 will kill a d1 in the rough with TC, unless your talking a long steep hill (esp sand) that requires absolute speed and momentum, and its TD5 vs V8, %&^$##@(*(.
cheers

I Have owned my D2 since new and when it was new the Traction Control was completely different, as for now maybe the disc's or break pads are not "grippie enough", climbing a hill with TC it will struggle to stop the front wheels from spinning to transfer the power to the rear wheels to push it up the hill. if u had someone monitoring if ALL 4 Wheels were spinning you would find that it wasnt. I happens to mine sometimes that i get wheel spin up a hill, i stick my head out and the rear wheels are not turning at all. The Idea with TC is to make all 4 wheels spin at the same rate. Traction Control im my experience will get you nearly everywhere when u use A CONSTANT REV'S OVER ANY SURFACE low revs sometimes better than hi revs
I have had my D2 stock as a rock run right behind a Landcrusier 100 series with 3" lift and Full set of diff locks over very very tricky surfaces and i was running no CDL just Traction Control.

I wonder if larger wheels makes ETC a bit less aggressive also. I assume the computer is programmed to supply the pulse pressure at far less than maximum pressure for a few pulses and if that does not stop the spinning of the wheel then to increase the pulse pressure, by which time you might have spun that wheel quite a bit...well a 29.5 inch passenger rated carcass tyre is going to be braked a fair bit easier with those first pulses than a 31inch LT say (a lot heavier) which more moving mass to stop...
Cheers
PS. I think my ETC is not as 'powerful' as it was from new but I put that down to the heavy large tyres...but it still works well and combined with centre diff makes for a good climber. In the video above the D2 has large wheels - at least 31's, probably a bit bigger, and you can see his working really well.
