hard to start
Gday I have a 2001 disco that I have just replaced the head gasket on. I now have an issue with it starting sometimes it will start straight away but most of the time it will take a long time (up tp 15-20 min) turn the key and it clicks (sounds like a solinoid click ? ) I keep turning the key on and off until it finally starts, could it be a crook alternator or a dodgy starter solinoid ?
Cheers Andrew

Try this for the starter. (should be the winner)
Andrew
Firstly check the battery.
You need another person to help with the next one. You need them to sit in the car and turn the ignition as if you are starting the car normally. You or the helper then needs to hit the starter motor with a hammer or similiar. You just need to bump it with the hammer or even a long wood handle tool (axe). Hit the start motor first then turn the ignition simultaneously. Make sure you don't hit any moving parts such as the radiator fan etc.
If the tapping of the starter works then you need a new starter.
This may sound weird but definitely works.
Regards
Andrew
