    Advice on purchasing Disco 2

    Hey all, first post!

I wanted to get some advice on the disco's before i purchase one!

My dad had a series 2 black disco with the 4ltr v8 and that's basically what i'm looking to buy now that i'm off my p'plates.

    1) What sort of km's are safe with the discos and what should i look out for when going to buy one? i'm interested in auto and specifically the 4.0ltr!

    2) Has anyone tried extracting more power out of the V8? Extractors, exhaust, tuning etc... Any recommendations? I know they aren't race cars but a bit more up and go makes things a bit more exciting!

    3) what will safely fit under the landy's guards before needing to jack it up?

Thanks in advance i look forward to your answers, cheers!

Make sure of their service history.Especially the auto and engine.
Mine has 140k on it and its had the heads off as there was a leak in the gasket.Check all the in dash lights and make sure they dont stay on when its started.I suppose listen for noises under full lock.Run it in low range.

A descent exhaust will make it breathe better and maybe a snorkel down the track.I had 265/70/16's under mine before i lifted it without to much drama.

    Cheers Mat.

    Heads - up

    HOLDZZ
[LIST][*]You should look for ACE.[*]Make sure the person who is selling has a spare key. (Key & Fob) otherwise knock $350 off the price straight away.[*]Take it for a test drive. Usuall stuff, lock to lock. Turn the stereo off but also tun it on to check it works.[*]Look for oil leaks (generally leaks around the rocker cover, head and sump. Also at the sump plug as some mechanics have some form of retardation when completing their apprenticeships seem rip all threads at least once just to know what a ripped thread is. Then a good ability to play dumb afterwards.[*]Sagging roof lining (another $350).[*]Park the car facing down a hill (fairly steep), turn the motor off. Get out. Walking around the car. Kick the tyres if you like. Get back in the car and drive away. In a auto, if there is a bit of a clunk not a big problem. [*]Look for 3 amigos. It's like pimples on a teenager. Nearly everyone with a D2 experiences this. (PS, do a search on this forum for 3 amigos) Easy fix but can be talked up to your advantage.[*]Fuel economy varies from 16 - 22 litre per 100k. Considering you are around the P-Plater era I'm not thinking 16. Sorry dude for stereotyping.

Also have a search on the forum for the same question you have asked as you are not the first.

    Regards
    Andrew

The problems with the d2's are common, therefore you're local land rover specialist can check over you're potential purchase BEFORE buying and give you a list and quote to fix. It may be a big list which will hurt later on. I was blinded by the sheer beauty of such fine british engineering and it bit me in the wallet...still love her though

    Congrats on the P thing,,
The D2 will never beat anything from a set of lights,, (maybe your Dad??)
more power? power is what your mates in riceburners want,
think torque, your next car weighs 2 and a 1/2 ton, power at 4grand is worthless--
    think 4.9 stroker kit.

The good news is, they are comfortable, relatively simple, cheap compared to anything remotely equivalent, have great traffic vision, and dont get stopped by speed bumps.
    Enjoy.

And they don't tend to get stopped by police. Ace is nice but by no means esential. A coiled non ace is a nice handling Simple piece of kit. Cheers

Maybe it because mine (II) and my mates 2a are both high comp 4.0 MANUAL trans but they go like stink. They are seriously good off the line for big trucks. Mine tows my 2 tonn boat fine (but because of 31 inch tyres I would not like to go too much heavier).

    Cheers

PS. I think there was a letter/number in the engine number to delineate - try searching for that one here...Cheers

Hi compression motor...look for the "95 octane recommended" lable inside the filler lid.

A 2100kg vehicle with 136kw of power is NOT going to set the road on fire...that's 65kw per tonne power to weight...a 1.8lt mits Lancer is good for 85kw/t...and that's both at peak performance without a load (driver and passengers).
    Torque...landy: 340nm
    Mitsi: 160
1/2 the torque but also half the mass.

Remember, you're looking at buying a truck...a well endowed and comfortable truck, but a truck none the less.

    Thanks for that!

I understand im buying a truck but the urge to always get that little bit extra lies within me haha.

What about going Gas injection? I heard it has a bit more power than petrol? Good idea considering i'd be a bit of a lead foot.
