It locks the trans into whatever gear you select.
Hi Guys,
Re shifting when in low range M mode, how does this affect the auto tranny,
and what is the least damaging way to use this mode?
2003 D2a Auto TD5 good Landy gone
2015 D4 probably the most amazing yet, why get a RR?
It locks the trans into whatever gear you select.
Think of it as a manual box i'n low ratio and treat it the same, change when you should, Don't be nasty to your auto![]()
I use this feature most of time I'm in low range.
It makes the beast a lot easier to drive with the engine brake effect.
From a standing start on level or downhill surface I take of in 2nd(and most of my steep climbing).
I spend most of the time in 3rd down as low as 1,000RPM (TD5) and use a light throtle to drive away.
I try to drop it out of "M" to let the box change gears as I feel the change is to rough with no clutch with it in(2-3 ect. as I want it).
My thought is that if the auto isn't hunting for the right gear your not wearing it out as quick.
As a side note the only time I had the transmition hot lamp come on was doing atrack in High when I know it should be Low, just wanted to see if it could do it![]()
Wow i have never had the lamp come on on me and i hope to avoid it forever. This includes twin locked full noise doughnuts in Low D.
I use Low drive auto when driving on the flat, then depending on the hill ill use L 2 locked in M. Manual is excellent for going down hill in 1 or 2. Generally for hills i run in low 2 M, but if its pretty muddy etc ill use 3 or D auto so if it needs a bit of boot the auto can choose.
Like baffle said, treat it like a manual and try not to slam it down gears.
I am constantly surprised by how well it will engine brake down hill, much better then my mates GQ's and 80 series cruisers, that just dont at all.
Like everyone else said ... just drive it like a manual ... although I tend to use 3rd or 4th Low M alot unless it's very hilly .... down hill just slip it back a gear, or two, and the torque converter will play catch up for a sec' or two for excellent engine braking .... stops you giving the brakes an absolute canning in steep downhill situations.
Kev..
