Advice on TD5 cylinder head replacement

I have a crack in the cylinder head on my 2001 TD5 and am told the head needs to be replaced. (Grr!)

I have been quoted $4000 to supply a new head (genuine LR) by the shop ... but looks like I can get a 2nd hand head for around $1795 (plus shipping).

The 2nd hand option sounds good but I'm worried might be false economy.

Once I factor in labour this is looking like a job of anywhere from $4500 - $7000 and the treasurer is displeased at the expense to say the least - so I'd welcome any thoughts!!

A better alternative is a Spanish head from Europe, like the ones Turner Engineering sell here Special offer Land Rover parts from Turner Engineering
and at 1095 quid, (A$1800) plus shipping, it's a cheaper and some say better option.

Jeepers. With shipping it looks like just under $2000 AUD delivered, with 12 mth warranty.

    Sounds like a reasonable deal!

Does anyone have any experience with the heads supplied by Turner Engineering?

(The mechanic who has my car in bits at the moment told me there were two aftermarket heads which he said were both rubbish ...)

for a few bucks more than a second hand head you get a new reportedly improved head with a 12 month warranty from T-engineering. So I'd be asking your mechanics reasoning for saying they are rubbish.

See if you can get a reasonable KM complete motor from a wreck, should be available for less than $5000.Keep your motor for spares or to sell bits off.

Bear in mind that in reality any second hand TD5 head should be skimmed before fitting as the gaskets have a type of wills ring which digs into the face of the head.

I wouldnt touch a second hand head that you dont know the history of, when a new one is hardly any more.

Turner Engineering have a good reutation as far as I have heard.

    just been down this road.
Turner engineering head $2100 landed. I would buy one of there head fitting kits. (I didnt) but cheaper than getting gaskets bolts etc locally.

    Cheers

Thanks all for advice and suggestions. The Turner head is looking good, methinks.

Sounds appropriate. A turner head for your head turner (i.e. D2).

Update: For better or worse (definitely worse from my bank account's perspective) I've ended up opting for the genuine LR head.

The mechanic who has my car said that there's a problem with the alloy used in the AMC heads sold by Turner (the alloy being too soft). In the end I've decided that a full warranty from him plus warranty on the new head is "worth" the extra expense.

The downside is that SWMBO is now agitating fairly urgently for a sale of the D2 and replacement with "something more sensible".

I'm holding the line for the moment at least
