    DISCO 2 or PRADO (ouch)

    Hi

I am living and working in Uganda and in the market for a good quality and most importantly reliable diesel 4x4.

    My options are as follows

    2000 Land rover Disco 2 TD5
    1997 Land cruiser Prado 3.0 KZ-TE

I would like to hear from the "horses mouths" or so to speak.

Its important to keep in mind that I have no passionate love for any of the two vehicle, I am simply looking for the most reliable vehicle.

How reliable are the Disco 2 TD5's really

    Regards
    Leon

Go the D2, i have a 2003 prado, with the 1kz, its a crap motor, gutless, thirsty and expesive to repair, which seems to be a general thing with the prado, lots of things seem to cost a fortune and most things cant be done at home easily. With the d2, you will get a good powerful and efficient motor, though they are also expesive if you break something like the 1kz, atleast you i will be saving on the fuel. My 1kz gets 12-14L/100km at the best of times.

If I change the options to the following would that make a difference

    LAND CRUISER PRADO 3.0 KZ-TE
LAND ROVER DISCO 1 300 TDI
    LAND ROVER DISCO 2 TD5

    Cheers

the tdi is the easier and cheaper engine to get repaired as it doesnt really need much specialist tooling.

the tdi will have more Ks on it and they are just as efficient on fuel as the td5 but not as powerful. The TDI has a higher basic maintenance cost with shorter service intervals and the requirement to replace the timing belt every 80K Km

the td5 will be the more comfortable vehicle and should be lower Ks its more powerful and they come with more mod cons than any of the TDI varients. They also tend to cost more.

From my perspective its a bunch of personal requirements that separate the td5 from the tdi IF one or the other has what you want at the price you want you buy that one, there is no need to sway the decision based on which diesel powers a disco.

Guess you need to work out what parts for what vehicle are readily available where you are and if not available, then most easy to source..
No use getting any of these if they will be off the road for weeks waiting on simple things like hoses, or a water pump etc...

Almost any car is reliable if its maintained properly and parts that are worn are replaced before they fail, and all these will be 2nd hand cars you are looking at..

Also are you handy with tools or are you getting the local shop to do the work?..Alot more facters here than just buying any of these and hoping they run forever..

    Cheers Ean

    No passion?
Patrol sounds more like what you are after.
Get the one with the 4.2L Diesel.
I am not sure which model that is but its super reliable and boring as bat ****.
    Hope that helps.

as coming from Mozambique i know what limited spares and tools and experienced later model 4wd mechanics are in Africa i personally go for the fix it at any mechanics shop like the 300tdi older landcruiser are every where there to so spares are every where
personaly in Africa stay away from computor based cars unless you have spare computors nanocom and spare essential sensors and know what you doing
i drove a TD5 defender from Naroibi to Capetown and was trouble free but had all spares and above tools with me just incase
    cheers kelvin

If you are bashing around at slow speed off road a stock d1 is more comfortable than a stock d2 - nice soft springs and smaller anti roll bars. Having said that a d2 will get you further due to traction control. Mate landy's were huge in Africa so I would go an older one. A d1 would be my choice. Cheers.

My 99 TD5 has 337,000km on it and as never let me down apart from a waterhose wearing through on the steering colomn as I fitted it incorrectly, not the cars fault. I'll tell the story in another post but you NEED to fit an engine saver alarm to what ever you buy.

A friend of mine has just bought a Prado and is now selling it to buy a Disco. the prado has a shocking Vibration in when towing and is a common problem. he has a diesel and finds economy good though.

good luck with the purchase but a disco would be my choice.

    Cheers
