D2 Overheated

From memory & seeing through the RED, I had to make a trip about 15kms to my mechanic & had to stop a total of 6 times as it overheated. Each time i stopped I lifted the bonnet, undid the bleeder screw in the top hose, waited for the pressure to release till I could get the header tank cap off & fill her up again with water. In all six stops I want through 3x5L bottles of water so I assume it used part of the radiator volume, guess you could say she was spewing out:mad:

Mine went the other way, between 7 & 8 and a oil gallery so it filled everything with water, emulsified and spewed it back through the rocker cover breathers into the inlet, killing the MAF as well.

I've noticed that Land rovers don't really like doing things by halves so, surprisingly enough, with all that pressure in the system, it didn't even look like blowing a hose!!!:o

Just a quick question on this subject,, did you get a gurglng sound coming from the dash before your main problems? Mine (V8), was pressurising, but found a weak point through a hose, replaced the main filler cap, I think the thermo was changed too,, all was good untill I heard the gurgling again yesterday,, but at no point, have I had it over heating, and can't see any water in with the oil at all,,
Could this mean I should be looking a little harder towards a gasket problem?

Mate - I would be looking at bleeding air from the system by parking it uphill with the overflow cap off and running up to temp and seeing what air you can get out. If its still there get it bled at a radiator place...and look for leaks which can be very hard to find...for eg under the intake where the throttle body is heated...start with the simple stuff.

Yes mate, had the gurgling sound from behind the dash quite bad, the LR guys I use emptied the cooling system completely then they vac the air out of the system and hook up the water & coolant mix letting the vacuum fill the system completely, then the head gasket went, since it's been fixed, heads tested and shaved etc, the gurgling water sound is all but gone even though the bloke that did the HG under warranty didn't vac the system so now, every time I think of it, I lift the lid on the header tank, block the overflow outlet, slightly loosen the bleeder screw at the same time as blowing into the header tank with my mouth till coolant comes out the bleeder screw. LR guys said if I keep doing that eventually, as small as the air bubble may be, eventually it'll move into the right spot that I will blow it out the bleeder screw.

After checking things on the weekend I inadvertently let the overflow hose fall onto the clutch fan, got to work this morning and found a trail of water where I had just been.

I couldnt get to an auto place in time so ended up using some 10 mm aluminium tube from Bunnings and rerouted the hose in front of the radiator using the original hose with the gauged section cut out.

No leaks so far.
