    Leaving the bitumen with 18s

    Planning a short trip next weekend in my recently aquired D2a which came with cooper discovery H/Ts on the 18 inch rims. This will be the first time I have taken her of the bitumen and the terrain will be kind of quarry type country, mostly rocky with a few sandy creeks and possibly a bit of black soil in between. (bit of everything)

    Now my mate who I am going with has a new hilux twin cab and he suggested I take the disco no further than the local park. I responded by pointing out that his hilux has more in common with a camry than a real 4x4. So obviously there will be a bit of rivalry when we go and I'm keen not to get stuck! (the hilux is standard alloy rims with adventurers)

    So what's the advice (besides getting a second set of 16s) on:

    1.Rocks
    2.Sand
    3.Mud (Pretty sure the answer to this is turn around)
    4.Steep inclines/declines

    If your vehicle is well serviced, you will have little problem keeping up with a Hilux. The Hilux will have far more clearance issues than you will if he is running standard height.
    Engage the cdl when off the bitumen and let the TC do the rest.
    Don't worry about a bit of mud (within reason), momentum will get you through.
    Also, drop your the tyre pressure.
    Don't forget the snatch strap - your mate may need it.

    I had road tyres on my 18's and was still very happy as to the off road ability, recently swapped the road tyres for the General Grabber AT2 which have a more agressive pattern and even happier. Just be careful not to drop the pressures too much on the rocky stuff as the rims start to get a bit close to the rocks!

    Took my D2a to Fraser Island wearing 18's and highway tyres in August last year. They hadn't had rain there for a while so the tracks were very soft. I never had a problem once I got the tyre pressure right.

    CDL and TC will be your friend.

    Be prepared to be the Toyota Recovery Vehicle.

    My 18's with HP tyres where better on the sand then my current 16's.

    18's on the disco has big flat contact area and dont dig in, not like my mud tyres anyway.

    The only times I had issues on 18's with HP tyres was a mud hill and also getting out of a pretty big hole where I tore one tyre and broke the bead on another.

    Thanks for the advice, he coopers are pretty chunky for a road tyre. The brochure on them says 90% road and 10% offroad whatever the hell that means?

    What type pressure would you guys recommend?

    You'll be fine... Remember to adjust pressures (but not too low on gibber) and you'll be fine.

    Wheel spin on rock kills tyres otherwise you should be ok...

    P.S> I run 18s (changed up from 16's) with larger rubber and it performs better

    18's and 33's...

    And this pattern isnt too aggressive for a daily driver either!
