    Stereo electrical gremlins - Disco2.....

    Hey all out there,
hopefully someone has came across the following 'weird' things I'm currently experiencing with my stereo? 'Dreaming' for a nice, simple quick fix......

My 01' Disco 2 ES has a few issues.
It has a Eurovox head unit (with tape player), Alpine 6 stacker under the seat, 11 speaker jobbie.

    1) the cd seems to skip, but the longer you have been driving, the more crazy it goes. If you take the cartridge out and replace it, it seems to settle down.

    2) every now and then, more often lately, the CD skips when the indicator is on (definitely in left turns, need to pay more attention to right turns)

    3) my LHside tweeter cacked itself, and I replaced it. It made a few pop' noises when turning the stereo on/off, and then had heaps of interference when indicating (so my dad said....), and then it destroyed that one too. I took it to Autobarn and they recon its got 12 volts going to the speaker!

The first two issues have been going on for a while and I was living with it, but now the tweeter issue is needing to be fixed because its annoying me!

My first idea is to look through the Rave Cd and probably rewire the tweeter from the crossover box - wherever that may be - but I was hoping someone may have already had similar issues and may narrow my search.

Could be an earth issue? Seems to be a favorite thing on these cars.
Its done 130000klms pretty much all on road.

    thanks for any help peeps,

    Darian

Probably not related but it could be if it's a dodgey installation, but the ES didn't come with the Eurovox head unit. If this hasn't been wired properly, then all sorts of problems could be the result.

Also, if it is a Eurovox head unit & an Alpine CD stacker, then something may not be matched.

ES models had a factory fitted system = Alpine all round.

Non ES models had a locally fitted system = Eurovox head unit + Eurovox stacker (if it had one).

If you have a Eurovox head unit in an ES, something has been changed.

    Hi Darian,

I would locate the Power Amplifier first and compare the voltages out of the various speaker terminals to see if the LH Tweeter output is indeed 12V (or way above the others). If it's normal then check the wiring to see if it's shorting somewhere leading to the tweeter.

Do you have and iPod ? If so I'd rip out the head unit and stacker and install an iPod compatible unit, possibly re-using the existing Power Amp if your happy with the sound. They are coming way down in price now.

Good luck - finding these gremlins can be tricky!

I also have the D2 ES and have purchased a 7" HD DVD player etc for mine, does anyone know where the amp is located? I'd like to reuse it if possible to maintain all my speakers rather than residing the whole thing with 4 speakers running straight from the head unit.
    Cheers

    Exclamation D2 ES sound probs

AH HA, the thot plickens.. My recently aquired d2 has the Harmon Khardon (spelling )system..That tends to play away to itself for a while and then it goes off and on for no apparent reason.. I have purchased a tape that allows me to play my Ipone thro the system.(incidently works has an hands free phone , all for $34.) . When the sound cuts out the ipod plays on, as does a cd in the 6 stacker..then back on but a few words into the song...... Sometimes it may go off when i change gear (its auto ) or I turn on the lights.. Any clues i want to change the system to a bluetooth/ mp3 but retain the steering wheel controls. Can it be done ?
    Thanks In eager anticipation...

Yes it can be done - do a search for steering wheel controls and you get pointers to people whove used interface devices like these ones: Pac-audio.com Products | iPod Integration for your car and More by Pac-Audio - Connecting you to the future

You need to purchase a head unit that is capable to be controlled by the steering wheel controls. The Pioneer unit I have unfortunately isnt but other Pioneers are, as well as other brands.
