Perhaps the engine wasn't labouring so much, which means you didn't have to have your foot down so far.
Try it again for a few more weeks to get a bigger "sample size" of fuel use data.

I do not know the algorithm for control of an electronic, but on the old mechanical ZF, if you drive in 3 around town you can sometimes get a better consumption because the injection cuts off fuel at 1500RPM on overrun and down hills in 3 the injection cuts off at about 60Kmh rather than around 80kmh in 4th. I change mine manually when I can be stuffed.
In a hilly area if the injection cuts off down all the hills it can save a considerable amount , but 2.5 L per 100 is stretching it.
So maybe an electronic goes to third in "S"?

kick down up hills happens earlier and kicks down 2 gears, not 1, then while climbing up the hill it will eventually kick back up 1 of the gears which is then held longer than if in "Normal".
A lot smoother overall. Think I'll keep it in "S" from now.
