D2 V8 fuel consumption

Hey Brad.
Mines does about 420kms around town, but thats with 235/85r16's, roof bars and cage, front and rear bars, winch, and full rear trays.
Last lengthy jouney was up to Kalbarri, fully loaded, with push bikes hangiing off the back and I was getting around 540kms out of a "fill to the brim" tank.

I tend to drive with a lighter right foot than most :angel:, and have found that for town driving, leaving it in 3rd works better on the fuel than simply sticking it in D.
Though thats only for town driving, once I hit a decent run, I'll drop it into D and use it like an overdrive gear. I have not noticed any diference while driving in D with sports mode on, though I do hear some have noticed an improvement.

I also tried running her on 95 and 98 RON for a while, and she ran like a bag of spanners, so she's back on regular and purring nicely. I tend to stick to one brand of fuel and clean the air filter out weekly, and generaly won't let her get below a quarter tank (as indicated on the lie gauge), and just run some injector cleaner through at each service interval. Can't remember the name, and I don't think its available in shops, but its bloody awesome stuff!

I seem to be getting around the 500k mark around town with mine. I do have a reasonably light foot though. It's no race car after all!
Tyres will help too. I have road tread and they are pumped up to 40psi all round.
Leaving it in third gear? I can't see how that will help economy at all. Low reva equals lower consumption. It's not like these things don't have to torque to deal with it.

With the oversize tyres on it at 55psi, I've noticed it throws the gearing out on inclines. Also, by driving around in 3rd (auto) on local low speed roads keeps it from changing up and down when it really shouldn't. For the same reasons it better for overtaking, and in freeway stop go traffic, where the gearbox doesn't need to keep kicking up and down.

It's a technique I was taught while doing my advanced (UK) driving licences. It's also a technique used by advance motorcycle riders - generally only use top gear for cruising - keeps power on tap for when you need it for safety.

It does work.

I put 77 litres in last night and it was to the brim at around 450 kms, so thats around 17l/100km.

I have just done a run to Perth to have a set of Browne-Davis tanks installed...140lt + 55lt.
Total distance 1600km down and 1600 back.
overall average consumption 17l/100, at an overall average speed of 115+kph. (Think I spent a lot of time overtaking road trains...you need to gather up the skirts to get past in the shortest possible time you know...there was a LOT of road trains:D).
On the full tanks, went Karratha to Broome, return. Total travel 1800kms total fuel 300lts, 7.5 hrs each way (no stops needed)...you do the math.
I could probably do better economy numbers...but with 200lts on board...why?

Home to Coolum Beach, straight up the pacific hwy, through brissy, 976km, 10hrs15min ... 95km/hr average.

Happy ? ... I was :D

Yeah, I've been following his thread .... I have no idea why it would be drinking fuel like a V8 ... watch that space ... the eventual answer will have to be a corker!

.... na, that's a REAL rattler. Too much engine for the likes of me! :p

.... for me, it's all about "range". If I could get better range from a V8 Disco I'd own one, but on gas that kills the range, and ability to refuel in remote areas .... hence the jar of marbles choice :)

556km on 85litres of 98 Octane around town, suburbs and heavy traffic on the highway and I tend to have a heavy foot.

Not too bad, works out at 15litres/100km with 245/75/16 muddies on steel rims, front bar and roof racks etc.

Still get around 13litres/100km touring on the highway if I stick just below 100km/hr and take forever to get up to speed, but thats not why I bought a V8...:angel:

Just need to fit the long range tank and I should be good for around 900km range at 15litres/100km.
