    Thump when I start/stop

Just got back from a Gunbarrel Hwy trip and the car now has a distinct thump when starting and stopping the engine. It's especially noticable when cold. Just had a major service (280K) and the mechanic (LR specialist in Perth) could not find the cause. Engine and exhaust mounts are all ok. He said he has the same problem on his car and cannot find the cause. Any Ideas?

A thump you can feel or only hear?
    Is it on gas?

Engine mounts? you will have a slight vibration with this.

gearbox/transfer knocking on the centre crossmember?

Muffler knocking (worn flex joint) this can cause a vibration as well.

    Water pump bearing

    Idler bearing

Are you on a footpath when you stop ?
    Could it be the pedestrians?

The above was a joke inserted specifically for the amusement of Harold Scruby !

Thanks for the feedback guys but I have a feeling my mechanic checked, shook, belted, rocked etc what he could while under the car and didn't find anything so I was thinking it may be something internal. The car is in park when this occurs so I guess it's not transmission. It's a TD5 and it also has become louder generally as well. Would there be something inside the exhaust causing it?

Maybe a pop from the manifold gasket or flange?
Does it tick like you've got a leaky exhaust?
