    New Headlights

    Hi
just back from a great 8 days up the strezlecki track , managed to hit the only rock in all that mud that took out my passenger side headlight , a mate had a pair of old series 1 spares , have put them on and need new h4 globes , was thinking of the 100/90 units instead of the 60/ 50 standard jobies , any experience as to if they get to hot or draw to much power
    thanks

The best globes on the maket are the newer high efficiency 60/55W globes, usually marketed as "plus 50" etc. The 100/90's will draw down the voltage and melt dipper switches unless you are running headlamp relays and can also discolour reflectors with the extra heat.

For a couple of years I ran a 60/55 in one headlight and a 130/90 in the other and there was no way to tell which was which. So I suggest go for the efficient ones.

I got my plus 50's from the UK on ebay, and there's these:

Philips Vision PLUS H4 50% SP brighter headlight bulbs: eBay Motors (item 140399791330 end time Nov-11-10 13:13:25 PST)

i bought mine from super cheap auto for about $30 the pair (for the d2a) so it is single globes per lamp
they make a huge difference. I have them in the main lamp and oem in the high beam lamp. The 50% out shine the high beam easily. I rarley find the need now to use high beam.

I recently installed a set of these:

Osram Night Breaker NightBreaker Philips Xtreme Power 80% 90% AutoBulbsOnline

    Significantly improve the light output.

Agree with Disco...HIDs are the better option, however, need to be concious that they really should only be used in vehicles with SLS.
Part of the ADRs for HIDs is that the vehicle is either self leveling or the lights themselves have auto leveling mechanisms.
You should also be aware of the colour temp. you order. Everyone is rabid about 6000K cool white, but the OEM supplied HID lighting systems are 4300K.
I had a disco 3 with the OEM HIDs, and tried replacement 6000k globes, and they were pathetic....bright (to look at) but very poor for seeing with compared to the original 4300 globes.

Yes there 4300k globes 55w took all of about 40mins to install. I have a set of Narva spotties on the car and the standard headlights on Highbeam make the spotties non existant. looks like the spotties are my next upgrade.

I upgrade my Super Oscars to HID (35w kit) and is a simple set up and more than adequate light power
I have the Halogen "plus 50" equivalents in the head lights, which are fine enough, and are not blinding for other traffic, as some conversions can be.

I lashed out and got a set of IPF Fatboy Globes and i have to say they rock. Now when i dip my highbeam/spots i'm not plunged into darkness.
The low beam actually has a higher rating than the highbeam. They have a 60/80W rating but produce light equivalent to a 150/190W rating.

They are pricey but i will have no hesitation in getting another pair!
