My '99(good year:)) has a steel spare also.
Mine has a full size plastic cover to hide it(now in shed).
If you change the wheel fitt the flat nuts to the carrier first to space the alloy out.
The studs are to long for the alloy wheel on mine.

Thanks for the contact Alien I will give him a ring when I pick it up.This also has the plastic cover its sitting in the back.I want to get an alloy spare for it but will have to wait till I get it as they put slightly later model wheels on it and I dont know exactly what year they are.

This is Tombie's website. All the details are here under Td5 upgrades. You will need to see if you have NNN or MSB ecu to determine whether you will need a new chip or just a remap. IMHO this is one of the best value mods around.

In terms of real word performance difference, I really noticed it climbing our range. I used to hold the throttle constant the range used to slow me to meet the speed limits. Now I need to back off to meet the limits.

I don't know if this is a must-do but I now tend to drive thinking about exhaust gas temps. On long hills I will go down a gear and use less throttle rather than a higher gear with the boot on the floor.

I have had my ECU upgraded by someone else and also put in a larger intercooler.

The extra ooomph is quite marked for both the chip upgrade I did first and then the intercooler.

I mainly did it for towing the camper trailer so that I had something in reserve for 'Mum and the kids'. We have not changed our driving stlye and so the improvements/upgrades have really been so that we are not working the vehicle as hard to do what we want it to do if that makes sense.

Fuel economy is about the same or slightly better than standard configuration. Hope that is useful info for you.

It is Stuu thanks. I will be towing a mid 80's full height van which is suseptical (Spelling) to wind drag a bit so any extra would be great.

Our tdi Defender was working to pull or 1 ton (when loaded) camper. The stock standard Td5 was a book figure 25% power improvement.

In many ways that was enough but by chipping and adding the intercooler I have increased that by probably around 30-40% again. That gives me some in reserve so I am not pushing it hard to drive in a sensible manner with the trailer on but at the same time not dawdle.

Mine had only done highway driving with no towing for 127,000kms when I added the chip so I know it had not been given a hard life.

I'm definately getting keen on this upgrade as it would'nt hurt (I think) to have more under foot if needed. Thanks Stuuu

Hey Steve. Congrats on the purchase! It's a small world, I was actually eyeing off your Disco when it was for sale and was about to jump in the car to go and buy it!! A combination of not being arsed going all the way to Albury, being a Sunday and having so many Discos to choose from in Melbourne stopped me.

I'm glad to see it went to a good home!
