    99 TD5

Hi all, appologies if this has been done already I could'nt find details on it. I'm looking to buy a 99 disco td5, $13900 with 176k on the clock. Providing its been looked after how many k's could I expect to get out of this before I run into trouble/rebuild?.Are they "Generally" a good reliable vehicle?. I have a full height van will it pull it ok?. Sorry for the multitude of questions but I figure the members on here would know a lot about them and I could certainly use your help/advice as I dont know a hell of a lot about LR's.
    Any help Appreciated

    HI Steve.

    And Welcome

I have a 99 TD5. It has 338,000km on the clock. It looks like the tranny is original but will get a rebuild soon. This will cost about $2900 change over from ZF the manufacturer and about 600 for removal and refit. from what I can tell this is about the same as a Falcon. All come down to how it has been servised.

A mate of mine is selling his 2000 Prado to buy a 7 seat Disco after testing a TD5 with ACE (active Cornering enhancement corners flat with this) and SLS (Self leveling suspension, rear airbags). He is towing 2.5 ton of Boat. I believe it would be hard to find a beter tow vehicle then a TD5 with a chip for some extra grunt and SLS. You can ditch your level rides with a TD5.

The TD5 disco is rated to tow 3.5 ton. i was told this is higher else were in the world just can't remember the figure.

If this one dosn't have ACE and SLS I would find one of them to drive first to compare the haves and the have nots.

I love the disco and he seems to just keep going.

    Cheers

Hi Matt thanks for the info. I'm reasonably experienced with 4by's but just not these, very much in the dark with them. I'm not sure if it has ACE or SLS I guess I'll find out tomorrow. I reread the ad and it says it has a CDL so from reading threads on them thats a good thing yes? I have to say I'm pretty keen on this one if its any good. What chip goes in them, how much and where do ya get them pretty interested in that.
    Again thanks mate

1999 & 2000 they had the internals in the transfer case but no linkage into the cab. The CDL makes an amazing difference when in 4X4. I put my linkage in using one that was second hand in Aug and that was $495.

An ECU upgrade for the 1999 & 2000 models means a new chip soldered in to the ECU. Later models are flashable. For yours expect around $600 depending on where you get it done. Tombie2 on the forum does them, someone else has advertised them - can't remember who atm but check out The Verandah for the vendors. I had mine done by Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide but there are others in other states that do them too.

Added to this the larger intercooler at $1200 which is a great investment.

    Happy buying.

    Hello Sharkee
I can appreciate your dilema, My 2001 Disco TD5 auto sls chipped ECU Mantec Snorkel larger intercooler through exhaust. has been towing my 5.9mtr Seafarer Victory fishing boat on tandem trailer through the Adelaide Hills to the gulf from my place at Strathalbyn for the last 5 years the boat weighs approx 2 tonne. besides going to other area,s of the state fishing.I have recently been to Arkaroola in the Flinders Ranges it was another good trip, August big trip around Northern Territory accross the kimberly down through the West back to SA via Nullarbor Plain it has never let me down Yet [ never say never ] I would say that the engine itself would be reliable given that it is serviced properly it appears that most Disco problems are with the peripherals,ABS ECUs etc read through more pages on this site it can get scary, I really enjoy my Disco but dont tow more than 2.5 tonne its enough for this vehicle anymore weight will knock it about. Thanks Stuuu yeah I guess it can add up pretty quick. They are advertising it with CDL so it probably does'nt actually have it then I would reckon.
Thanks Nutty does it pull the boat ok(enough power). The more I read on here yeah it does cause some concern but I guess the more gizmos a vehicle has the more that can go wrong unfortunately.
    Thanks Guys

Dono't be scared off by what you read here. Every car that you buy can have problems. The cool thing is, every problem that may come up with the Disco has already been had by somone on this forum. that means they have most likely worked out how to fix it and where to get the parts for a good price.

Also I have found all the parts from the good suppliers are about magna prices.

Regardsless of what this one looks like make sure it has ACE and SLS if you are towing. you can tell if it has ace by the 2 filler caps on the power steering res and the sls is in all 7 seaters unless it has been replaced with springs. I am refitting the air bags to mine in coming weeks. If it dosn't make sure you drive one befor commitinfg to this one.

    IMHO

    Hi Steve

To see why SLS (and ACE) is so useful when towing have a look on YouTube at the "Discovery 2 launch video"

Good luck with your search and be patient as Vehicles with SLS and ACE are less common but they are out there.
    Cheers

Yeah let me know when you see one,

TD5 with ACE, SLS, low kms, in good nick and is reasonably priced.

I swear there is an army of cashed up buyers that sit on the internet all day waiting to jump on one the second it is advertised.

    Oh wait thats me!!

    And still no success

    Enjoy the hunt
