Thanks guys. I went to look at it today and was a very nice looking vehicle, Dark Green metalic. It had the airbags on the back not springs so SLS yes?
I was a bit pieved off as they had changed the wheels from what it was advertised with, had BFG A/T's and when I got there(2 1/2 hr drive) they were'nt on it they had swapped them for road tyres. I had a look under it and there was at least one oil leak which they reckon they'll fix for roadworthy but does'nt look like its done much if any offroad. Did these vehicles come with a alloy spare as it has a steel one. I'm going back tomorrow morning with the missus. lol dont suppose anyone wants to have a look at it for me. I'm Very nervous right now.

To be honest ... colour is probably even more important than a good service history. So if it's green, I say go for it!
Pretty sure that they all came with an alloy spare though.
If you're unsure about anything with the car, make sure you get it checked out by someone who knows Land Rovers before handing over any cash.

Agree with below - if you like what you see, put a holding deposit on it and get it checked out by a reputable mechanic like Fred Smith in Bayswater. (and not a dealer)
Main things to check when you see it:
Full documented service history - ie with all the recent full reciepts of work done (not just dealers stamps) or discussin with the mechanic who has serviced the car recently.
Usual checks for this model (search on this site) including dust in the airbox (walk away if it's been 'dusted' as this can be very serious), oil in the injection harness, 3 amigos etc.
Sagging rear end (air springs leak - easy DIY inexpensive fix usually, but you can use to negotiate the price down).
If it has ACE, there should be no leaks as it's a reliable system.

From what you've described it sounds pretty good for the money.
Like buying anything second had it's very important to check the service history.
I would call someone like Fred Smith 9720 4999, for a small fee they may be able to check any logged fault codes, injector harness, etc.
Is it 5 or 7 seat? (7 seaters are generally worth a bit more)
They came with an alloy spare, but I wouldn't let the steel wheel be a deal breaker. Good for negotiation, but not really of consequence. (buy a soft cover if it annoys you too much.)
I feel for you, it's a big thing stepping into the unknown.

Thanks guys, I would get it checked out, but logistically its very difficult to do as its up on the Vic/NSW border and as much as I would love to have a rover specialist look at it I cant see me being able to. Stupidly I have to put faith in my limited mech knowledge of vehicles and bloody pray I dont get it wrong.Its from a Ford dealership and not a small shonky one but not that that makes a great difference when it comes to getting ripped.I looked today and the service books are not up to date which I thought bugger that but I tracked down the previous owner and quized him on it. He said the services were done by a backyarder as there is'nt many mech up that way that know a hell of a lot about Landy's. I know I'm too trusting but little things that were said, I feel he was legitimate owner if he was'nt he deserves the academy award for acting. He said it was done at 10k intervals. He also said that it had done no offroad and was just a 7 seater family car "4 kids" and looking underneath it supports his claims as its not knocked around. He also said he replaced the rear airbags, had a new head put on it( why I'm not sure ). I asked him why he sold it and he replied I have 4 kids the two eldest are 15 and 13 and it was getting too cramped so purchased a people mover. He also said was a bit sick of when anything needed to be done it was $1000 plus labour. He just got a new key for it recently he said it cost him $500 for it. Does that sound right? For the price they are covering changeover, paying the reg as its due and because they stuffed me around with the wheel change are putting on a set of new BFG A/T's. I'm keen on this but do you think I'm making a mistake getting it without no documented proof of servicing? I'm going in the morning!
Its quite neat and 170k hopefully is'nt too many k's and most up for sale have done 250k plus for around the same $$ give or take.

The Key Fob thing is if you don't know what your paying. New FOB and key should be about half of that if you check out the forum here.
Big ask without servicing background but only you talked to the guy so can't help you there sorry.
Some of us have had no problems what so ever with our Td5. I also have only had one appearance of the 3 amigos and that was after the front shocks were changed and the ABS module got knocked. Troubles can be had but that is the same with any vehicle make.
Only words of wisdom I can offer you for tomorrow are: if in doubt bail out.

Sounds to me like he was getting "touched". Parts are no dearer than toyota or nissan.
It does look pretty tidy.
For a 7 seater with SLS, 170k I reckon it's looking like really good money. Especially with new tyres, rego, and the oil leak fixed.
If you do get it, I would take it to someone who knows Land Rovers for your first service. (but I think the 180k km service is a big one with all fluids and filters)
Take it for a really good test drive. Rough roads as well if possible.
