    Disco 2 Thoughts

I have been searching for a defender for quite some time, however when I discovered the ridiculously small back seats I had to move on. I am looking at the Disco 2 and would love some feedback on this particular model with the TD5. Any particular problems I should look for? Are they reliable etc? Would appreciate your thoughts. Cheers, John

    Disco 2 Thoughts

Hi Catesy, we have had a 2003 Disco Td5 auto for a bit over a year. It has been comfortable, economical and reliable. We tow a 1.6 tonne "off-road" caravan so have had the ECU upgraded to give equivalent power and torque as a Disco 3 in standard shape. We have used it as our main car for that time and towed our van up the Oodnadatta track, thro Dalhousie, Mt Dare, Alice and back home to Adelaide. The only problem we have had is with the locking nuts that are fiddly and a drama if you break the adapter, which we did. I recommend replacing the locking nuts with ordinary nuts ($5 each). An exception might be the spare tyre which you don't have to torque onto the bracket as tightly and so is easier to get off, for both yopu and a tyre thief. All in all we believe we have gotten great value for money because it was about $8000 cheaper than the equivalent Prado and is more capable to boot. Good luck with your decision, cheers Jim

We have owned our d2 for just under 2 years. I wish i could say it was reliable, but i cannot, hence we are getting rid of it. The list of problems would fill this page, and has cost us over $10,000 at a minimum. It was great when it was working, but they called it an "off road vehicle" because it spends most of its time off the road and in the workshop.

Had my Td5 for about 2 years now ... travelled 20000 kms in that time (every day car and tourer - towing a 1.5 tonne CT) and had the known issues addressed before they may have affected the vehicle.

Do a search ... plenty of related topics here.

However ... it's never missed a beat and I feel very confident with the Disco.

Do your research, get a well loved one and never go back to Toyota or Nissan ever again!

    so far so good

I bought my d2 a year ago to travel around oz and have since done a fair bit of touring and off roading- the d2a has been great. I bought for the same reasons as a previous post listed- cheaper than prado and better in my opinion. I would try to buy a d2a (2003-2005) as these have a few niggles addressed and have the centre diff lock reinstalled which I think makes a big difference to off road perfomance. There are some common issues and it's more a case of understanding them (3 amigoes for example) and then they don't seem so daunting. Mine had 200000 ks on the clock, but was in great condition with a good service history- I think reliability is about good maintenance so check the history. It has 230ks now and all ive had to do is regular maintenance like filters and oil changes. Having said that I have had the three amigoes and the rear plastic bumper is abit vulnerable if you really go off road- mine now has a steel replacement bar. I still think they represent great value when compared with other vehicles, most of which have their own issues.
