Are all these TD5s that are having this problem, late models (IE)EU3 D2a/Def 2002/3 on??
Any early TD5s having this problem, from 99 to 02 EU2 models?

Does it have a cat fitted, many later Td5 have these fitted and as with all vehicles they do clog up and cause poor fuel consumption.
They are not a legal requirement to be fitted, so a few folks are just removing them outright.
cheers
mine is a 2000 make with a manual . i just had it repaired last week 2 bent con rods and leaky injectors. at the last service all seemed fine by seat of the pants feel but then agaian it had been a month without as i had to ship it too darwin for needed repairs. the lack of power and increased fuel usage wasnt imediate [ no big bang ]. in the last drive from geraldton to exmouth the 140 ltr tank on return showed empty light on but 60 litres has put it up to full . i am trying to get a consistant level of fuel using both the guage and amount put in. the guage will show dead empty when filled to the first click then about 250 k later jumps up to full then a p[rogressively faster descent back to empty. very confusing.
I have a D2 2001 TD5 auto with 240,000km... I do oil and filter changes to my auto box every 10,000KM, every change my auto is so much more responsive...
I have noticed mine using more fuel lately, I am a hawk when it comes to monitoring my fuel as i am using 2 stroke oil mix in the diesel. When I started using 2 stroke oil I was getting 10L/100km in the CITY!
after about 20,000km of doing this it started to increase to around 12L-14L/100km! very strange... and was annoyed that it was back to being normally when I bought this car new...
then i discovered oil in my injector harness, oil filled my ECU , cleaned and replaced the injector harness and now the D2 is back to normal, noticeable power increase and fuel is back to 10L/100km
Just take out ur ECU and check for OIL in the harness...
also clean ur Air Flow Sensor
also are you running original tyre size?
try 2 stroke oil mix in diesel awesome results in many diesel engines... and lubes ur fuel pump etc....
Thanks Redback for clarifying a D2a. Friends D2a same issue hence my post on the Cat. His went from 15/ 100 to 10.5 /100 after removal and noticeable power improvement.
Might be worth a look.
cheers
I'm interested in this adding 2 stroke oil to the diesel? Whats the go? Is it proven? Can it damage the engine/injection system. I'm all for improving performance/economy but not at the expence of anything else. Information please!
Regards
Robbo
Hi Robbo ... I've tried one dose of semi synth 50:1 2 stroke oil in the D2a so far (Jonsered/Husqvarna oil).
Fuel economy impovement ?? .... maybe, maybe not. My results are pretty consistant, and IF there was an improvement, by my record keeping, it was about 1.5MPG (0.7L/100km or 0.5km/L) .... maybe an extra 50km per tank ?
At an average 800km per tank, I've used about 5.6L less fuel (at $1.299/L that's a saving of $7.27, less the 2 stroke oil at $5.00) A saving of $2.77/tank .... 20 fills/year is a saving of about $55 p.a. ...
... there was a definite reduction in the noise of the engine at idle though. No placebo ... it was quieter.
I'd say it's a marginal improvement. Better power ? Didn't feel any different to usual. I probably won't pursue this any further ...
Fuel Consumption issues:
1. Ensure no oil in harness
2. New fuel filters
3. new air filters
4. clean / or replace MAF
5. check egr butterfly to see if it is completely gunked up
6. check/clean the intake manifold
7. check/clean map sensor
8. check air system for integrity/leaks
9. check for fuel in oil (injector leaks)
10. check cat to see if clean. replace/remove it.
11. CHECK YOUR RIGHT FOOT AND SEE IF IT NEEDS CALIBRATING!
