Should i be getting worried? Td5

Have recently got ourselves an 01 d2 es td5 auto, its got 250,xxxkm on it now and there are a few issues which im starting to worry about.

A fuel consumption is hideous, at first it was using about 13.6 L/100km which i put down to being used to driving the v8 rangie, 2nd tank was about the same, 3rd tank we got only 15.2L/100km which is getting me worried, seems to be not so bad this tank but i was expecting about 11-12L/100km.

The td5 isnt running rough, overheating. I would say it hasn't got as much power as it should have, but its not too bad its not a dog to drive, it is due for a sevice and i know the air filter is quite dirty and i have no idea when the fuel filter was done last, and the hose from the turbo to intercooler pipe bellows under load. I cleaned the afm the other day which was filthy and it now runs noticably smoother, however a bit broke on it in the process so ill get a new one, at the service i had planned on doing the coolant, thermostat (were planning on towing a van around aust) and getting the radiator checked and cleaned along with the intercooler, change coolant, all filters, do the egr
mod and put sillicone turbo hoses on, there is 1 broken manifold stud so ill repair that and mod the manifold and get it hpc coated and i may tweak the boost a fraction.

Could being due for a service cause the excess consumption, or am i looking at something more serious such as the heads moved on the dowels, how do i know if it has steel or plastic dowls? where can i get an M10x1.0 adaptor for my diesel compression tester as everyone wants between $260-$300 just to do the comp test im nearly at the point of making one out of a glow plug but ill have to buy one as i have no spares, i have checked the fuel press reg and it doesnt appear to be leaking.

Should i get a comp test asap or just do a full service and see how it goes?
And where is the best place to buy a nanocom?
Is there any reason i shouldnt replace the centre muffler with a straight through pipe? - it rattles when cold. (auto)
Where is the best place to get SLS bags ? UK ?
Any suggestions on work to do b4 a big trip other than obvious hoses and belt etc?
Can you flush/replace ace fluid? What oil?

    Thanks, ryan

wow, this hi fuel consumption issue for TD5's is starting to snowball....

ide do a service first do a tank and see how it goes.
then ide service the auto, if my hunch is right, like my D2 it will get worse after the auto service

there isnt much point in doing a comp test on only 4 cyl's and not doing #5. murphy's law will have something to say about that...
i made a compression tool out of a dead injector to do all 5.
my head had moved and my compression was #1 240psi the rest were 260psi, after a head skim, valve reseat, new gaskets, sensors bla bla bla i now have 320psi/ cyl...but im still using crap loads of diesel.
im getting the auto rebuilt next.

as for telling if you have plastic head dowles....its a guess...
one way you might be able to tell is have a look at the locating stud on the front pass side of the head and see where it is in relation to the hole in the head. my head had shifted to the rear of the block making this stud rub hard up against the front of this hole, the stud actually left thread marks in the hole...

Should i get a comp test asap or just do a full service and see how it goes?
And where is the best place to buy a nanocom? try karcraft

Where is the best place to get SLS bags ? UK ? try karcraft or search its been takled about on here before
Any suggestions on work to do b4 a big trip other than obvious hoses and belt etc? check for cracked body mounts
Can you flush/replace ace fluid? What oil? transmax z from castrol. i just drained the oil from the tank and replaced it 4 times, while cycling the ace system with the nanocom.

from what ive read over the past 3 months about the zf, it gradually gets worse after new oil.. the new oil takes off all the varnish and burnt crap from the inside of the trans and makes it slip. ive got 2 samples of oil both 100mL one is 15 000k's old and mine is 5000k's old. my sample is darker/more burnt than the 15 000k one.

so now that its the trans cooler, ide do a comperssion test, ( i suspect you will have good compression, 300psi+) that will give a good indication of engine health, and if its good, then ide almost deffinatly say its the auto.

    cheers phil

As for the high fuel consumption, have you checked your engine oil level? It should not be filled past the full arrow. If it is noticably higher, you may have diesel getting into the oil from the injector seals or a cracked head. Do an oil analysis on it if your unsure. I am monitoring mine at the moment for the same problem. I just got 515km on half a tank on a recent trip so all may be ok (I hope). Hope this helps.
    Regards
    Robbo.

i am wondering about the fuel consumption as well but to get a comparison is it worth while including specs such as auto v manual roof racks tire size etc so that an equal comparison can be made ? what would be the expected use for hiway and combined cycle usages ?

I dont think it wil be the trans, im not saying it isnt, but i doubt it, there is no slip, it shifts how it should when it should, the oil in it wasnt dirty at all b4 the hose went, inside the trans is clean to, not the usual black film on everting that you would ussually get, i will look into it during the week nd report back
