Moving to Melb, where can we go for the weekend?

Moving the the family from Darwin to Melbourne in the new year. We are looking forward to using the disco for some good beach/mountain weekend trips.

Anybody got any good suggestions for camping trips or good drives? We're ok with cabins/tourist parks as well.

Toolangi, Wombat state forrest, Licola, Tallarook, and along the great ocean road offer some great day or weekend drives. These are just a few that come to mind.

Get a book on the Victorian High Country, Desert regions, south coast area, there are endless places to go for a weekend.

Book in for a Tag Along trip.
There's plenty on offer with clubs and commercial operators.

As crash suggested, plenty of fun just a bit north at tallarook, wombat etc. If you have a weekend, head through mansfield or eildon to jamieson, a great little town. From there you have a smorgasbord of high country 4wding and some beautiful country and trout fishing if you are inclined. Another good one is the road to woods point via launching place, mt donna buang and acheron way, again a weekender. I did that last year after some snow in july and it was spectatcular. I'd just be a bit cautious after rain- the high country tracks get pretty slippery when wet, much like any other track i guess. Rooftop maps are fantastic and widely available in melbourne and vic, they are excellent guides and I would grab a few and just explore. I've just done the reverse swap, and am now in darwin. Any ideas for good day trips/weekenders? cheers

My great grandfather lived just outside Jamieson and I have family in Dargo (best pub in the world). I would say that the Vic highlands are a barrel of laughs in a 4WD and is some of the prettiest countryside.

Bonus would be it is very different to NT countryside (I imagine anyway, haven't made it to the top end yet).

    Cheers

The Otways is what I was trying to think of when I mentioned the great ocean rd.
Check out the Victorian trip section on this forum for more ideas and photos.

Thanks everyone for your tips, I'm looking forward to exploring the high country, especially in winter.

Welcome to the top end, enjoying the build up I hope?

Believe it or not it's getting harder and harder to find any decent places to escape to up here as most of the land is either a park (the rangers are nazis!), private property or aboriginal land. The ultimate adventure for me is obtaining a permit to explore arnhem land although Kakadu also has a lot to offer except the rangers close the roads after a heavy dew.

Recently I did a day trip out to the country around adelaide river, it's excellent. You head down the stuart hwy until you get to adelaide river township (approx 45mins) then turn off onto the old stuart hwy which is on the right just after you cross the bridge. Head about 12 km until you see a bitumen road heading straight up a hill to a radio tower, drive up to the tower where you will see a dirt track continuing on from there. From there on in there is heaps of exploring to do with the good thing being that it's best during the wet as it's all rocks, sand and streams which run after the rains. it's a good day trip and one of the rare swimming places you will find with no crocs.
