    New springs,NOT-HAPPY-JAN!!!!

Hi all,I'm on my first trip with the new springs&shocks in the d2 and im not impressed,on my old d1 I had the same combo of Billies and king springs and it was great!,std height but heavier rate (lifted about 25mm)so it sat slightly higher in the rear so when loaded it sat level(average load).when I picked up the D2 (same company, brand of coils and shocks)it was sitting dead level with about 20mm more from wheel to front guard than rear, correct according to manager.I could allmost......,accept this but when loaded with about150-200kg max of gear,it looks like its ready to take off, then hitch up the camper trailer (60kg on the ball) I cant stand to look at the thing!!!!!!!!!. Have King springs changed the rates for the d2,all I wanted was the same result as last timeI've another week and half travelling before taking it back to Mr FUL%#@M ,BUT i'M not very optomistic!! Sorry about the winge but it's t,aken a shine off the trip a bit, anyway,I'm in Cootamundra-Junee for a few days if anyone wants to catch up?.....my shout, cheers,Gregg.

They didn't fit them in the wrong ends did they?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Are the same rate as your old D1 springs and shocks I only ask because the D2 is different.

I remember king springs changing the heights of their lowered spring for fords a few years back, ultra low became super low etc etc, maybe it's just a matter of going next step up to create the desired effect. A D2 would be heavier than the D1 yes?
Would that be something to factor in, if I've understood you correctly you've gone the exact same spring & shock combo as before in the D1.

When I upgraded my springs and shocks I originally looked at Kings and Bilsteins, however I went Dobinsons and Bilsteins.

The supplier said the Kings would not be up to the task of a heavy D2 and would not guarantee the springs.

On a side note, a mate had Kings and Bilsteins in his D1 and swore by them, but that was a D1.

    Hi Greg,

I have new Kings on the front of my D2 - sits level (original height) as I have a winch and bullbar. They are the STD height heavy duty.

When I spoke with the Kings technical dept they gave the impression that if I fitted the springs and they were not right upon fitting they could be swapped for the raised version.

Given youve used yours a bit, may be a stretch but I'd give the them a call, ask for the techncial guy and see what they can do. I would try and get them exchanged for the riased version - they may ask you to pay a fee for refinishing them.

    Good luck

    Simon

I put standard kings on mine after the fronts sagged ,5 seater, therefore coils all round. The front came up well, steel bar,no winch.I then replaced the rears with standard kings,& i have found them no better than the stock rears. The car sits slightly raised at rear empty, actually almost levell with a full tank of fuel.

As you have found out,the standard kings are not heavy duty, will handle no more weight than the stock springs,in fact on the last big trip we did,we only JUST got away with it.I don't tow anything,& there was only two of us,nothing on the roof.

New set of HD coils is what you need, but i am no expert on springs.....

Thanks everyone on your thoughts,,yes the d1 was perfect but obviously a different beast! The job was only done 3 weeks ago and no off road only hi-way with modest load, tried axle articulation today and now I'm even more p!@@#$d off. With the left hand rear tyre in mid air,the front axle was still almost parralell(spllcheck please) with car, which makes it useless offroad, the fronts seem too heavy ,rears too weak, yes I checked,lots-a-landies ,they at least got them in the right ends!!!!!.Also checked invoice and correct part nos,it's jusst bloody annoying coming from so-called pros,,not much luck on the train spotting front either, the wheat's too wet to to harvest so not many grain trains and the main line between Syd-Melb run most at night so no good for video!!,anyway,I still have my health....,hey,whats that rash?????,Cheers for now

See if you can get the spring rates ( in lbs per inch which is the normal way they are measured) from Kings. I have an aversion to them because AFAIK they do not publish it anywhere.

I suggest you talk to a specialist like Graeme Cooper, who has done dozens/scores of these and will have a recommendation.

That is why I buy LRA springs always as you know the length and rate.
They are not perfect , as I have had one shorten 12MM , but you know what you are getting.

Assuming that you have the correct springs for the D2, there is an inherrant issue with buying off the shelf springs. The companies offering spring and shock sets design them to cover as many applications as possible.

We all have different requirements, carry different loads and have differing expectations from from our suspension setups. From experience, ARB thoroughly evaluate your requirements and then suggest a package - if not happy with it they will change it to something that does make you happy. Despite this, I learned that it's still not what I wanted, did some research, spoke to others who had been down this path and then hade springs made up to suit my needs. Found appropriate shocks and arrived at the desired result - took some time but was worth the effort.

Check that you have the right setup for the vehicle (in terms of springs) and if yes, it'll be some trial and error to get to the desired result.

    Cheers,

    Franz
