I think the issue Vern is more to do with mud and dust getting into them and wearing the joint - they start to click. This said, I never had shields on them, but talking to Tombie, his 7100's do have rubber boots over the rose joints which may help. Life for me was about 6months, I'm not sure what Tombie or others get out of theirs with the boots.
As to whats most suitable.... for me, rather than running another set of 6100's with 360/80 valving for the front, Heasmans matched me up to the GU/GQ rear Bilstein which was very close in size, rubber bushes and correct valving. I think thats a better way to do it unless you dont mind the rose joints and either you cant match the shock to something else out there or you need short body remote canisters for packaging reasons. You may find in your case that one of the Landcruiser Bilstein products (Bilstein can be run upside down unlike most) or something similar may be a comparable fit to what you're after but with the correct mounts to suit.
