Question Help!! Transmission Oil Warning Light??

    Hi Folks,
I had red light appear tonight on dash that i've never seen before so quickly looked in the rave cd and traced it to the transmission oil temperature warning light.

    ** Edit: Manual V8 D2 (High Compression)***

I'm a bit lost with the rave cd and hope some folk can help (please).

    1. Under 'lubricants and fluids' rave cd makes reference to "main gearbox" and "transfer gearbox"... yet the section under 'Warning Lights' makes reference that the "gearbox" oil temp is too high - so which is it, 'transfer' or 'main' "gearbox" that I need to check...??

    2. What brand is a 'common' brand to use for the 'gearbox' oil? Rave CD refers to MTF Texaco 94 (manual main gearbox) and Texaco Multigear 75W/90R for transfer gearbox?? (cost is a factor at present)

I'm assuming the oil must be low as it is not hot weather and the car was being driven at a snails pace (within the speed limit 50/60k's) and probably for 10 minutes two trips...

I also looked in the good oils section as well as searched and didn't find anything to help me above (unless I entered incorrect search strings)...

Hope some folk can shed some help for me.... as I need to get this sorted tomorrow morning...

    Thanks heaps,
    Lp

If *that* lamp self tests on startup then yes, it could be a gearbox overtemp.
They do do it, mainly towing or on the beach,,
park the car level, and the only check is through the filler plug.
there is a proper sequence, (something like this--)car warm, hand brake on, run through all gears check whilst in ???? gear.

How long since its been serviced?

    Been through water lately?
Does the light go on straight away when you drive or only on sand/towing etc.
If straight away , then the sensor is faulty.

    Hi All,
Thanks for the replies. To answer...

Other than feeling like a beached whale some days (10 weeks to go until #4 arrives) no towing and no beach (LMAO)... the only water it got was when I guernied the inside of the engine bay area to 'tidy up' the dogs breakfast from the problem with the throttle body housing leaking... oh and giving it a wash last weekend!!

I spoke w/ Luke from Peninsula Rangie this morning (having never spoken to them before - usually get my work done @ Mornington Prestige but too paranoid to drive that far) and explained the problem. He was very kind to make time to see me at such short notice. I was advised that all appeared to be ok and plenty of oil *huge sigh*... was advised that it could be the sensor...

As for the lamp behaviour this morning... driving to Peninsula Rangie it was intermittently flashing on and off, not in a solid state at all which had me thinking before I got there that it may be wiring of which I explained to Luke so makes sense if it is the sensor...

Its due for a service... altho I would call it more than that with the growing list of 'common' gremlins that need eradicating... :-) They will be nipped in the proverbial soon.... hallelujah!

    Thanks again,

    Lp

Have had mine come on from time to time, usually towing our camper. Has the auto checked and there seems to be no problem with fluid etc.
As soon as I get the auto serviced again, I'm getting a proper gauge fitted so that I know what is actually happening in there. Apparently (according to Fed Smith automotive) they can be a bit dicky and he thinks that they are a pretty inaccurate sensor and might react to a cmall amount of fluid, hence the reason they go out so quickly. His opinion was that if it goes off within a minute or so, it's probably ok. Those who know Fred know that he is very familiar with al things LR, so his word is good enough for me.

Could be the transfer case temp switch wiring chafing on the case, it is quite tight up over the top of the trans and can touch, causing a flickering lamp.

The Manual trans AFAIK doesn't have a sensor on the cooler, might be wrong though.

Hope all goes well in 10weeks time LP! Congrats!

And don't forget the pics, not of the birth though, please
