    Electric Water Pump/Thermo Fan

I have recently been in touch with Davies-Craig re fitting thermofan and electric water pump to my td5. They gave me plentiful information re tested and verified improvements to cooling system and performance gains. They are unable to give me any information regarding fitting of the water pump vis hoses/new serpentine belt etc. I was wondering if any aulro members have done this conversion. At approx $750 all up it appears to be a very worthwhile modification for the performance gains from eliminating fan and pump drag....combined quite significant......and from the improved operation of the cooling system.

I can vouch for them on competition machinery! Had an electro-magnetic water pump fitted that was thermostatically controlled (You could pick the optimum temp). It worked fine in all weather conditions on a V8 that ran to 8500rpm and was pushing close to 300bhp!

Minimal battery draw and I could run it on after engine shutdown to prevent heat sink.

Can't see any reason why a similar system couldn't be adapted to a TD5 although from an engineering perspective - do you think the cost and significant modifications would gain you enough to justify all of this for what could be just 3-4 additional HP??

unsure Catmatt, Davies-Craig claim power loss of up to 30% due to cooling system loss.In that case I would get get back (not gain) up to 30kw which the cooling system was stealing. sounds amazing doesnt it. I just wish I could confirm this from anyone using this system on any vehicle.....real before and after figures. It will cost at least that much to modify the engine to claim 30kw, but I was really after the cooling system improvements with the free power gains as well.

TBH, while I have also used Davies Craig pumps in race cars, I think it is not really a viable conversion on a td5. The fitting of it would be a nightmare. (I'm not sure its even possible thinking back to when I have had my cooling system apart)

Also IMO there is no way that the cooling system (pump and fan) would get anywhere near taking 30kw. maybe 5.

yeah thanks pete, I kind of agree about the power loss/gain thing, and looking at the plumbing I also kind of agree about how / where it would fit....I still like the idea though. the pump I guess can go anywhere as long as it can be plumbed into the system. looks like I might be the crash test dummy for this one......

I got my numbers mixed up....just checked the website claims.....3-5% fuel efficiency increase.....up to 10kw regained. bit more realistic.

I had a reality check, got in, down, around, over and under the td5 looking to see where the electric pump would fit, seeing its supposed to simply go between a 100mm cutout in the bottom radiator hose.....hahaha......I dont think I will be attempting this until the current belt driven pump fails. I've been given a ba falcon twin thermo fan unit which may well ....easily go in though.
    cheers Dennis
