    Unhappy One Dead Disco

I was driving home yesterday afternoon when i noticed the disco having some trouble. I was getting intermittent power loss, throttle response was in and out, and the auto wouldn't up change or would start to change up then flare in between gears like it was revving in neutral.

I then started getting massive vibrations like the engine was misfireing or i was loosing cylinders.

The only dash lights I was getting were "M and S" transmission fault lights.

I managed to nurse it back home.

The first thing that came to mind was oil in the injector harness so i got some contact cleaner and gave the ECU plugs a good clean. ( there really wasnt much oil in there) I left it to dry overnight.

This morning i refitted everything and took it for a test drive around the block - two laps in and the vibration and power loss came back AND IT DIED!

It lost power to the point where it stalled. It was like i ran out of fuel.
I thought to myself - Fuel Pump.
So i turned the ignition to "on" and i couldn't hear the fuel pump kick in.

Ive checked the fuel pump fuse - its good.
I pulled the cover off the ECU to check for oil IN the ECU - nothing.

Is this a dead fuel pump or something else?
    Why the transmission faults?
    ANY OPINIONS WELCOME.....PLEASE

If anyone has a spare ECU or wants to come round for an arvo and let me test with theirs AWESOME. The fridge has beer

    Thanks, Matt

    Shoot
Hope its as simple as a MAF sensor, when mine went the auto changed terribly and the engine ran horrible, I could not go above 1700 rpm and it ran shocking.
    replaced and instant success
    All the best

Flex plate letting go? This would explain the vibration.

Do you think cleaning the MAF sensor would help or full replacement?
Does it just fail like that?

Still doesn't explain no fuel pump at ignition to 'ON'

If the M & S lights were flashing, you wer in 'limp home' mode. You will need to replace the inhibitor switch on the side of the transmission. You can get them for about $250 second hand and although awkward, they are not a difficult thing to do. Get a RAVE cd if you don't already have one, follow the steps and you'll be done

sounds to me like your fuel pump. search td5 fuel pump problems/replacement. wardy might right too, but when my fuel pump died I had every flamin fault come up.

I dont think it will be the MAF, with it being a td5. It may make it run a bit rough but not stop. Try unplugging it and testing again.

Does the fuel pump not run atall when the ignition is first turned on? If not I reckon its either a pump, or pump relay failure.

I have a spare ecu, and diagnsotics, but am on the GC.

    Where in BNE are you?

Edited to add, I had a pump / relay failure on mine and it did a few weird things.

Fuel pump does not run at all - swapped out relay with another of the same and got same results.

I'm in Ashgrove- Inner Northside Brisbane, bit far mate.

Can you check there is power getting to the pump as it should. (there is an access panel under the carpet in the boot floor which you can get to the pump through)

If there is power getting there, I think you will be pretty likely to have a pump issue.

Start there anyway as it should defienetely be running when you first turn on the ignition.

    Thanks mate,
Yeah that was going to be my first check tomorrow. I've had that access panel open before replacing my leaking fuel lines......
    Gotta love it!
