Gday All,
Been trying to find an oil leak for last 3 days and thought it was the Vacc pump at the Alternater, but when we got home tonight the front diff, steering, sump and drivers wheel had oil on them, but it was clean oil so investigated further and found the problem..
1 of the gearbox oil cooler pipes had been rubbing on the small pipe that runs from the front to the back of the steering box..
The pipe in question would be about as round as a straw a about 12 inches long..My advice is that you see if yours is rubbing and if so wedge some rubber or something in between them..
My next question is..Has anyone removed this pipe..I have tried but it looks like you need to remove the steering box to get it out..(bloody Landrover)
I think I can solder it up till I can replace it but looks like a mission to remove the pipe..
Anyone done/expierienced this?
Cheers Ean
The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
I will let you know..I have undone it and all the fluid has drained out so will see if we can remove it..
Cheers Ean
Well it does come out, you need to loosen the main bolts that hold it on and ply the box out a fraction and the pipe will come out..
Now the fun part, getting another and putting it back in

This is the pipe that has rubbed thru..

Any competent brake shop should be able to knock one up. I bought a flaring tool (off a retired mechanic) that would have no trouble making that. Just need the right tubing.
Is it metric? If so let me know and I'll have a solution.
If it's metric I can send you some high press fittings and tube to join.
Well I took it off last night then went down the boat and braised it up, and fitted it this morning, and I even managed to refit it with the steering box in place,... but my braising doesn't seem to be as good as it once was and it let go when I was test driving the car this morning.
I let my fingers do the walking and hope to have a new one here tomorrow..It must run a decent pressure as it emptied the resouviour in a metter of about 2ks..
Will fit the new 1 when I get it and check all the other hoses for rubbing whilst im there..
Cheers Ean
What a PITA, the pipe from one end of the steering box to the other. That line would be difficult to remove even with the steering box out of the engine. Normally the return line which rubs through on the other side. I can send you one just in case, but if you silver soldered it, it will never leak.
A good way to stop pipes rubbing - a dab of silastic - still flexible but no more rubbing.
