    Has Anyone Done This?

As many of you are aware, I recently drowned my D2. Well actually it was only the ECU for the transmission that got truly drowned, enough for the car to be written off anyway.

I'm about to get my replacement, a D2a and the first thing I want to do is to waterproof this ECU as it is stupidly placed under the passenger seat where it is bound to get wet if 'the worst' happens.

My thought is to put it in a sealed plastic box with appropriate grommeted holes to handle the wiring.

Are there any likely problems doing this (heat etc)?

If anyone has actually done it, are there any pics?

I'm also looking to do something with the main ECU under the bonnet.

    All replies greatfully received.

    Hi Wardy,

Yes got a 100% reliable solution - use a boat!

Nothing personal. but I dont understand apart from a life threatening situation, why anyone would risk ruining a $20K + vehicle to significant damage by attempting to drive water crossings above a vehicles design limit.

I must be missing something as I've never done a deep water crossing - it must be a lot of fun to want to risk water lapping at your feet and all through the D2a's chassis, drowned electrics, drowned SLS compressor...

I hope you enjoy your D2a - they are a lovely vehicle.
    Cheers

Tombie2 made a sealed box with a snorkle for the ECU of a TD5, give him a PM he may still have the photos, alternatively, go into the D2au Yahoo site, I'm pretty sure there are photos of it in there.

I've been thinking of doing the same. You can get either aluminum or zinc steel boxes from jaycar that might act as more of a heat sink than the plastic ones. The other problem I thought of is getting a good seal around the wiring looms. You would nearly need to take the connectors off the wiring, push the wiring through the grommets in the boxes an then rewire the connector. That's a fair bit of work.

Have you considered covering the entire circuit board in wax?
they used to do that back in the good old days when all the circuits were overengineered and ran at room temperature.

You would have to consider the heat buildup and possibly a catch container incase it got hot enough to melt the wax.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I'll be having a go at it on the weekend, thinking that Aliens solution looks like a reasonable solution and not too hard to do .

Simon I DON'T go out of my way to drown vehicles but can I say that I DO probably play a bit harder than you do. That's not a criticism, it's your right to use your car the way you want to, as it is mine.

Having said that, a water crossing doesn't have to be particularly deep to have the problem I had a few weeks ago. Fairly fast flowing water a little over door sill level will still enter your vehicle if you stop, for whatever reason and there are heaps of reasons this might occur even without having water splash around onto the electrickery in modern 4wd's. An unexpected pothole under water or perhaps an unexpectedly slippery exit will do it. Believe me, it doesn't take long for the water to reach the level of the floor under the seat and hence the reason for this thread.

EEK!!!! Just checked out the loom extension..... $625!!!!!!

Agree with you Wardy. That was the main reason I fitted a snorkel, to guard against falling in an unseen hole and drowning the engine, rather than planned constant deepwater crossings. As you say it only takes a few inches and Id much rather be able to back out and continue on another path than sit there saying if only i did this....

I have seen some seal relays and such with a section of tyre tube with cable ties at either end to seal it up, but I reckon Alien has a good solution.
    cheers
