I just replaced the clutch fan hub (genuine - $360) and the header tank cap (old one slightly broken at the bottom - they dont last forever do thought it was good investment). Now she roars off the line when at 90degrees so the old hub must have been stuffed. It never gets above 102 on the scan gauge (used to rip up to 105). So rad flush, new hoses, thermostat, hub and cap and I am back in business without an over heat. I figure at 168k my water pump should still be excellent. My d1 has 285,000k on the original.
Cheers
PS. I also found my annoying 'vacuum' leak - it was the clutch fan hub slipping...it would usually only occur when backing off and follow the revs down and would wind down for a second after the engine is shut down just like a vac leak...Love killing 2 birds cause that sound was driving me mad!

No probs Pedro,I should have taken some pics of the inside of the engine oil cooler,it was as it left the factory too.
Not bad for 251000kms/12 years.

Job all done.
Did a brief test drive(5ks) feels stronger than before.
Viscous fan was definately shot, you can hear the new one roaring when the temp is up.
Was running a bit hot for a short time,90 to 105 degC,settled down to 86degC after a short time, air in the system I guess.
Will give it another hot test again tommorow,if all is ok I will replace the water with coolant.
