Andrew,
Are you just replaceing the viscus hub or the bearing in the front housing as well..
Sounds like it will be like a new car with all that gear getting re-newed..
Goodluck with it..
Cheers Ean
I started BlackBettys cooling system overhaul today.
More as preventative maintence, and preperation for being able to tow my campertrailer into the Kimberlys in the future.
I have a new radiator,ASE upgraded intercooler, new waterpump, viscous hub and thermostat to fit.
I have been stripping parts of the engine today, sofar so good.
Im not impressed with the last specialist that worked on my D2,he put green coolant in saying it was up to spec and told me he flushed the red coolant out.Not going into the red VS green argument in this thread, what really pees me off is the green coolant wasnt very green at all,had a distinct red tinge to it,IT WAS NEVER FLUSHED CORRECTLYThankfully its only been in for a few months.Job 1 was thoroughly flushining the cooling system, its clean as now.
Im pretty sure Ive found my "getting hot on hills" issue. After removing the top fan gaurd I was hosing the degreaser off the engine whilst it was running,I discovered that by spraying water on the fan I could stop it turning and even make it run the opposite direction. Then tried stopping it by hand,it has no drive pressure at all.Checked our Defender TD5,cant do it with that one.Was happy to find this, the new viscous hub was money well spent.
More good news.Them ProVents do a bloody good job,the insides of the intercooler hoses are basically oil free.
I have an oil leak to fix, still to find it.Its in the power steer/ACE/or man gearbox hoses. Not a major leak, doesnt drip much but everything was pretty dirty.
I also intend removing and inspecting the engine oil cooler whilst Im at it,I hope its not corroded!!!!
More dismanteling on the next day
Andrew

Hopefully the red , green , red coolant change doesn't open up any weak 'sealed' areas....
Unfortunately been there.. paid the price...
Well not strictly true... I wasn't there, mechanic convinced the misses the same...green is the way!!... I came back and 'we' paid the price...Always prefer my sieve in the kitchen.. not as an engine block!!
Best of luck....

I like that trick of spraying the fan with a hose to see if it'll stop/go backwards! A LR mechanic told me the way they test it is, to hold the fan when starting the engine from cold, and if it doesn't move when up to temperature, it needs a new one.

Hi Ean.
From the Rave it says they should be tight from a cold start then the fluid changes passages and then will freewheel whilst cold.
Mine freewheels fom the start without running the engine, the Defender doesnt.Mine has alot of play in the hub too.

Thanks Andrew,
Mine freewheels as well, I can spin it when the car is stopped, think I might be fitting a new one next weekend, just need to sort out if my turbo is ok first
Cheers Ean
Mine gets up to 105 in normal driving. It's had a flush a few
Months ago new thermostat and pipes. Still it's getting to warm. Checked the fan a week ago and it's stuffed. New one this week. Have not checked water pump but unlikey to be buggeref at 167000. Cheers
