    Winch and 2nd battery

Purchased discrete winch mount and will get the winch hopefully early next year. My question are
    1. Can i connect it to main battery?
    2. Do i need 2nd battery?

It should be conected to the main battery (very rare not to unless competition type setup).

It will work of 1 battery but you need to watch the electric loads.
A 2nd battery will share the load if wired corectly.
Remember if you have a TD5 you need to watch running voltage for the ECU(don't want it to shut down)

Use a snatch block(pully) and you half the load on the winch and reduce the power needed
    Cheers, Kyle

A typical 9000lb winch will draw in excess of 400A at full load. Accordingly, in practise, it needs to be connected the main battery and alternator, and used with the engine running. If you have a second battery with an isolator, the voltage drop will isolate the second battery from the main and won't share the load. In any event, if you have a deep cycle second battery, the high current draw will detrimentally affect it. So you don't need a second battery just because you have a winch.

If your isolator has the option to "parallel" (link) the batteries then using the second one as the winch battery is fine, and certain deep cycle batteries like optima and odyesey will run a winch with no probs.

Can I ask what this is exactly,,,,a pic perhaps,,
I've had a Warn winch on my Disco for over 10 years, and only ever run one battery,, never flatened it yet from winching, and had to do 4 full length pulls in a row one time,, Just took it slowly and carefully, gave it a small rest between each hook-up,,

Thats a great cradle, and what I was looking at doing eventually. I know it's not as accessible as on a bar but keeps the vehicle looking std and if I'm that stuck I won't mind getting dirty anyway.

Why not just use one of these from Tim (Drivesafe) ?

I reckon this is a brilliant idea !

Thats a nice bit of kit, and certainly well priced, however it would concern me that it can only handle 240 AMPS max, not enough for a full on winch session, exactly why I swapped my first relay for one of these.....

Went shopping today and for $32-50 picked up 620mm of 200 x 75 parallel channel (internally just wide enough to drop in a Tigerz11 12000lb'r) and 2 pieces 200 x 300 (5mm) for the side brackets.

A few hours with the grinder and mill & should be a reasonable replica. But probably much stronger and the channel is 8mmweb and 13mm flange. Pics as it goes.
