Heavy Fuel Consumption TD5 D2 after some mechanical work

My 1999 D2 TD5 had normal consumption 8km/litre in city driving and Highway driving anything from 10-12km/litre.

Then just recently I had a problem where a stud went on my Exhaust Manifold, so I had this all redone, now the exhaust manifold is soundly refitted etc. The car now has excellent pull, feels great but it has SHOCKING fuel consumption in city 5-6km/litre - highway will test next week on a trip to Whyalla from Melbourne.

    Any ideas?

    Nah Dave, he's got km/Ltr - not Ltr/100km.

    Try this:

    8km/Ltr = 12.5Ltr/100km
    5-6km/Ltr = 20-16.67Ltr/100km

An increase of 7.5-3.33Ltr/100km Since the work was done.

As to the cause.... no idea

    Cheers,

    yeah, oops..

lets try that again with caffine.

check the air filter and the air flow sensor values. you may also find that the CAT has blocked itself and a good hard workout may see it right.

99 TD5s are Pussy Free Dave
Check to se if the spanner man has connected the airflow sensor correctly(next to aircleaner on intake tube).
If its not connected the ecu will use a "safe" value. It will effect power and economy.

    The saga continues

Today went for a drive - all seemed good! Stopped for a few minutes and then after driving away lost power, rough idle, missing and belching Black smoke under load!!!

Luckily around the corner from my LR guy(not the same one who did the exhaust work). Now sitting at Maccers while he does a quick MAF and Injector harness replacement!

Will let you all know how it went. I know what caused the problem though ..... Satisfaction ........ I was just last week thinking how well she was going, and how happy I was with her. This is now divine mechanical retribution for smugness!

Not sure yet, depends on weather, spending New Year there (best mate lives in Whyalla), then head down to Yorke Peninsula - all weather dependent.

I put larger tyres on my old td5 and the economy went out the window. It was much slower on take off, like as if it was trying harder. i thought it was the tyres... Turns out it was the transfer case, one of the teeth broke off and went all throught it...
