Not a great move, what weight oil are you using?
I run 80/90w gear oil, might make it run quieter if you are running thinner maybe.
I have had the dreaded transfer case oil leak for some time now, have been topping up the oil , last top up was about 750 ml's,[ got a bit slack] I can hear a slight whirring sound , as in gear noise, should I panick, or keep a stiff upper lip? Bob.

I run 80/90, the noise can only be heard if I stick my head under the vehicle, but you are right, not a good move.Iam saving to get the modified transfer case fitted [ with a steel insert fitted , to eliminate the shaft in the case wearing the oval hole where the seal fits in the aluminium outer shell] I have been told this is the best solution for this problem. Bob
I put gear oil in a LT95 once. Transfer case started making all sorts of odd noises. Then it stopped. That is the transfer case stopped. Burnt the shimms aparrently. I was then told never to put gear oil in the transfer case and gearbox. I was advised to use engine oil.
I suppose this is not your problem though.

Not sure what to make of that, Mick.Valvoline H.P. gear oil , 80/90, transfer case, and valvoline dura gear oil , 75/85, 5 speed gearbox special ,gearbox, come highly recommended. Have been using both for some time with no obvious problems. My problem, I think, is the oil leak in my transfer case, which I was monitering, has increased in volume , not noticed by me, which means I must check the level more often.[ until I save enough for the modification] Just means no long trips 'till it's done.
