rear bar / tow bar options

    Hello All,

Well I'm about to take ownership of an 04 TD5 Disco (it's waiting for an open road between Sydney and FNQ. I feel for those who are flooded out at the moment). It's currently fitted with a tow bar that resembles a meccano project, and would eat/grind alot of dirt and rocks up here, so i am keen to unbolt and discard!

What options do I have? Is there a rear bar available that will accept a haymen reece style hitch, like the ARB RRC one?

    Cheers.

Are you going to be using it as a tow bar at all? If not, leave the receiver in and use it as a recovery point.

Think he's looking at something with greater departure angle. Like I'm about to embark on.

The standard receiver (plow) will hang the back wheels off the ground quite easily. Did it to myself on Sat, then ripped the bumper off it's pathetic plastic clips. Thanks to 101RON on Sunday it's reasonably back together. But will be making a new higher bar.

yeah, I am after an increased departure angle. I think i may have to go custom too. Here is a pretty basic photo (thanks to an ebay listing) that shows what i'm after. Its and ARB rear bar from a classic rangie. It allows for a reece style receiver to slot right in. I could always mod this bar..

There are plenty of options for new, custom made bars. In fact, I am fairly certain there is a thread in the D2 section dedicated to them. Search is your friend here.

The tow bar sits a fair bit lower than the rear bar. Adding a receiver to the bar would be tricky, as it would need to be certified if you were towing with it.

The best bet might be to make a new bar, and then leave the hitch out of the receiver unless needed.

Found the main thread, but there are heaps of others:

Thanks for the link to that thread. Yeah, I think that might be the most sensible idea for the moment.

Moving the receiver will only expose the tank.
Tank and receiver are on par for height.

Have had no problems with mine...either pre or post custom rear bar. Haven't been hung up and when contact has been made..acts like a slider. Saved the tank as Tombie said.

The genuine NAS hitch is a receiver style and sits much higher than any of the other factory bars and still provides "some" protection to the tank.
