    Silent Rotor filter??

I just serviced one of our TD5's. I can't hear the rotor filter. I normally hear them spinning down on shut down. The oil pressure light goes out as normal. Could it be a better filter than I usually get (bought as a pack from sourthern indi LR repairers and is either Brit part , mahle, bearmach. Anyone notice this before. ??

    If I remember correctly--
    its the other way,
the good filters spin, and you can hear them spin,
    bad ones dont.

    Big O.
I hate to admit it, but V8 lover Pedro is right. The filters that do not spin have too tight a fit on the spindle and I feel that the filter will not spin under operating conditions and being a centrifugal type, wont work. I am currently using a Bearmach filter and it spins down at shut off as it should. I always bathe the filter in fresh oil before installing. End of the day, if you can hear it winding down then you know it's working.

Did you drive it or just idle in the driveway?

    I run a genuine filter.

If driven and then shut down and can hear it.
If then engine doesn't get warm it's only brief.
Likewise, if the engine is idled down it is barely audible.

ON rave CD it explains that this filter doesn't get oil to it until the oil reaches 78Deg.
And then about 10% of the oil is sent to it to return direct to the sump.

Receipt says it's Beamach. Car is idled into the garage, but that hasn't stopped the sound of it spinning down before. When I replace them I always spin it on the shaft by hand to check its free and this was. Cars been all over town since I changed it and the oil pressure is fine.

I was wondering if they begin to make more noise when they fill with crap towards the next service time..

I think the noise is more affected by the rotor filter being slightly out of balance.

My 1st two oil/filter changes left me with a rotor filter that made no audible noise but if you shut the engine off and clasped your hands around the rotor housing you could gently feel the rotor spinning down .... while you hands got burnt!

The 3rd rotor filter I used makes enough noise to hear it spinning down after the engine is shut-off.

Just because you cannot hear it doesn't mean it's not working ... try the burnt hands test I outlined above !

I took it out yesterday and checked it again, all seems to turn nice and free and full of oil. I think yes it's just a quite one.
