TD5 ECU upgrade and diff gears
Hi,
I've got a 2001 td5 discovery (auto) which I'm slowing upgrading bit by bit and need some help.
I want to upgrade the TD5 ecu. I live in Melbourne and was looking to get the best bang for my dollar. I've done a bit of research but was after some opinions of who people have used and why? also rough dollars...
On another topic..I've been looking into getting some larger tyres around 32" or 33" rubber should I be changing to a 4.11 diff gear??
Cheers

Mate,
There is Les Richmond auto in melbourne somewhere. He stocks KAM diff products. They have 3.8:1 among plenty of others..... Rather pricy, but thought you might want to check them out, if you haven't already.
(I have no affiliation with this shop, just passing this on).
Tombie on this forum is the bloke to see about ECU's. Got to send it to him, and he is busy (hard to get in touch with). But worth the wait. Looking around $450 plus P/H.

For chipping Disco_thrasher or Tombie on here.
If you wan't to change ratio's the only aftermarket crown wheel and pinions I would even remotely consider fitting are the newest Ashcroft ones.
We run 33's on our d2 although it is a v8

Somebody also has a new ratio which is 4.14. Practically the same gear ratio as the 4.11 for all practical purposes, but it has a much stronger tooth count - so reportedly 25% I think it is stronger set of gears. I'm not sure if its Ashcrofts in the UK or Bill from Great Basin Rovers in the USA that sell them.
The regearing just makes it nicer for an auto on 33's, it regears back to standard. Its probably more important for a manual as these seem to suffer a lot more than autos when in low range offroad from loss of gearing. The manuals actually really come alive offroad with 30% low range transfer gears.

I run 4.11's in mine on 32's and its a TD5 auto, no chip, and love it. Its great in low range and lively around town. However it does suffer a bit on the highway as its a bit over geared for the tires. As others have said the 4.11 is standard gearing once you run a 33.
If you are going to the effort of changing the ring and pinions id seriously look at doing at least the rear dif up into a locker. Having the difs apart can be a costly exercise so while your paying for the labor to have them dialled in it makes sense. I'd rate the ratio change as my favourite mod so far, however i have never driven a chipped one. I am paranoid about the longevity of the auto as mine is a similar vintage to yours nudging 240k
