Unexpected Fuel economy / Lack of low rev power

Well I must say, so far (excluding the heater/aircon prob I have to fix) I'm very happy with our new disco (02 TD5 7 seat)

I've just filled it up after our initial big run up to Brissy from Newcastle, and was somewhat surprised at the fuel economy I got over the trip. Somewhere in the range of 9.5L / 100Km. Now obviously it was mainly highway, but even so I would have expected around 11L/100Km our of our old Disco at best.

This goes hand in hand with the fact that in the lower revs there's stuff all power. It kicks in around 2500 rpm on the dial and then we're away. But down low it makes for slow takes offs.

Could this be a chip tuning thing? A blocked turbo valve? Something else?

I can live with it, but I'd dig a bit more 'bite' down low for take off.

    Cheers

    Wil

You might have a leak in intake system between turbo and plenum. Check hoses and clamps.

as above...stock hoses can delaminate inside & reduce the intake volume...fit silicone ones.
check the boost actuator hoses too....TBH it could be any number of reasons...I had to trial and error until I I sorted it out. (split vac hose causing sluggishness & kangarooing)
Fit a boost gauge too...I think stock is 1bar but if you remap and clean your intercooler/inlet manifold you can run a bar and a bit without any probs usually.DONT go to 1.5bar and upwards on a non hybrid turbo unless you want to start replacing things!
After I had mine mapped my head gasket went within a week...so if you do mod at all, be prepared for the possibility of older components failing as with any modification.

    Thats my experience anyways...

No at all mechanically minded or knowledgable but after doing the EGR mine breathes better at lower revs.

Could this be SOME of you issue also?

The 2500rpm slug is how all stock TD5's are. It's just characteristic of the fuel map. A they spend most of their time in this rev range, it becomes an emissions programming control. Chip cures it but then becomes a choice of chip.
Tombie2 on this forum does a full remap as does another who's name eludes me as I sitting here in WA's northwest in 40C enjoying the best part of numerous brews......!

Dont bother with piggyback plugin types, get a full remap.

    Cheers

I'd swap spots in a second. Spent time after Xmas near Perth. 40C but no humidity!! Loved it! I'm hating being back in the sweat box ( Brisbane).

In further developments, I disconnected my MAF sensor today and went around the block. Holy smoke! It's alive! Heaps more responsive and boosts at or under 2k revs. Bought CRC MAF cleaner and gave it a whirl, a small improvement, but not much of one. Sooo...

    Is the MAF sensor stuffed?

Could this be a symptom of something else related to over/under boost?

I'm a bit scared to mess with the waste gate actuator arm.

This D2 had the head done about 2k mms ago, so there's been action under the hood.

    Wil.
