Best place to buy new alternator - V8

    Hi all,

My battery light came on today in my 02 D2 V8. The battery is pretty much new, but I have not tested it load wise with the engine off and lights on etc. When I drove home (straight away!) the Scangauge 2 would read 11.2 volts at idle and back to 12-13.2 when the revs were up, so it seems like alternator, but I have not tested its charging output. It has done 170k since new, and I replaced my D1 V8 alternator at 200,000k so its my bet. I will test away, but can anyone suggest a good place to get one new (I did the D1 re-con twice in 2 months before tossing in the idea of re-co and going genuine with no further problems - now with 290k odd on the clock).

With my D1 I sourced the genuine one through Ashdowns in Qld, but any other sources?

    Cheers and thanks.

Just some advice, if you do get yours rebuilt be careful of the type of bearing they use.

I had mine rebuilt about 3 months ago and 2 weeks ago the new bearing gave way causing the pulley to lock up and shred the serpentine belt... this was midnight in the middle of nowhere...

So yeh, make sure its rebuilt properly if you consider it

Thanks Gents. Its possibly just brushes and may not need re-winding (which I wouldnt do - brushes I would).

    Hi there
    Try here
Wood Auto Supplies Ltd :: Home Page
They ship all over the globe.
I rebuilt my D2 V8 alt,my RRC300Tdi alt and my Santana alt thanks to them, they stock even the brushes, slip rings, and these weird front bosch bearings than seem to be unabailable anywhere else.

If yours is a D2, here's your alt internals
Wood Auto Supplies Ltd :: 0123510073

Just call them or drop them an email, they make verything plain easy.

I'll be contacting them soon as my RRC300 Tdi's alt has given up the ghost again... those under size bearings so close to the turbo, you know what happens with heat and bearings...

Good luck and hope you can rebuild yours quick and easy

    Regards from Spain

I think the resister pack is shot and brushes at least...its not worth it to repair I reckon. I rang Ashdowns with the 10 digit Bosch Part no off the back of the alternator - they dont list it nor one for a D2. Rang LR - Austral - can you believe it LR dont supply them anymore.....

I have got quotes for non-genuine at around $550 and less than that from a member here. I would like to go genuine Bosch knowing how touchy the Motronic engine management system is. Surely there is a Bosch replacement for it made by Bosch...any help appreciated.

Triumph Rover doesnt have stock for another week.

    Cheers

    Hi,
it's a very bitter sensation when you ring Rover and they just do not stock bits four our trucks. That happens to me every time I ring the dealer looking for any body part for my Range Classic 300 Tdi.

    However, not all is lost,
Your brushes are sold in the same unit with your regulator, at around 60 dollars US,. They are alsa available separately but... are a pig to replace, It took me more than 45 minutes and I used a worn regulator assembly I had lying around. Spare brushes are around 2 USdollars.

Paddocks in the UK have available alts for your truck, at
    YLE000090 Alternator Assembly - V8 from 3A000000
if yours is a 03 MY then the complete unit is for 119 pounds sterling

And if it's earlier (bosch), up to 2A999999 chassis number
    ERR6413 Alternator Assembly - V8 to 2A999999
it's dearer at 277 uk sterling pounds

Just tell us which way did you take

If you decide to rebuild yours, it's not so difficult.
There was a tutorial in rangerovers.net
    Bosch_repair
it's from a bosch VW alt fitted into a Range Rover. Mine is nearly the same, even the regulator does look the same (only difference it that it has an internal diode which makes it more expensive to replace)

    Best regards
    Robert
