Some advice

Hi all I Have owned my 99 td5 disco for the past year and am loving it all expenses spared!,my knowledge with motors isn't all the plentiful just asking for an explanation on something, the one owner before me looked after it without an expense spared the poor guy had the oil pump bolt come loose at 130000,a used td5 was put in and new headgasket fitted, steel dowels, main and big end bearings, front and rear crank seals, water pump and new turbo. Now the used motor had 270000 on it would this work classify as rebuild?as I have now 220000 on clock.have been seriously looking into a td5 defender but worry about the kms I could get out of the motor as this engine work was a considerable amount of money for previous owner.thanks a lot if I've been confusing just ask anything to clarify

Thats near enough to a rebuild the only thing missing would be doing the pistons rings and bores.

if its not blowing too much oil out of the breather line then the rings are fine and my money says that a semi looked after td5 makes it to 500K Km providing it doesnt get something else kill it like a cooling system failure or the oil pump bolt coming loose.

Id probably look at a head gasket at the 250K Km mark and since thats been done reset the clock and investigate it when you have 250K Km on the dial past the Ks when the engine went in.

cooling system hoses and pipes are a 100K/5yr thing so that may be worth looking at and so far in my experience the radiator and fuel cooler typically make it through at least 2 sets of hoses before they need to be replaced.

use the search feature and have a look at other peoples fail rates on the td5. and what they had go.

So it sounds as though you're counting your replacement engine to have done over 300K now.
The TD5 engine should keep going as long as it's well maintained and it certianly sounds as though the previous work done was very thorough.

Whether you throw money at the Disco to get it to a level you're happy with, or whether you throw money at a different car of unknown history are both investments that will cost you.

The difference between driving around in a Disco vs Defender are very different.

You'd be best focussing on what you want out of your car, whether it be comfort, dependability, good resale value, reliability e.t.c.

The problem with older cars is that there is always going to be maintenance costs, especially in the case of a Land Rover.

All in all it sounds like you're looking for something that is going to be dependable with less klms that doesn't have the potential of breaking down or falling apart.

Better start looking at Jap models mate...

Thanks for quick replys, blk knight that's reassuring, original motor and surrounding has been very well looked after both in my hands and previous I guess only question is used motor but not sure if work done could semi reset that.I have my heart set on buying a defender and I guess working out how long I keep the disco will determine td5 or puma.I love the fact the jap cars get 500000 without drama but I've looked and looked and just can't see myself driving one.everyone I know ownes one also and it's nice to have something with a bit of character and roots.I guess everyone likes to tell the horror stories on forums and makes you wonder...especially with the massive mixed view on td5
