I would be going the box.
(1) Remove the engine,
(2) Remove the gearbox, or
(3) Get and/or stay drunk?
I need to access the rear of the TD5 engine block. Your vote would help inform my decision on whether to lift engine out or remove the gearbox. nb - I haven't tackled a gearbox removal but the motor with associated electronics and plumbing was a dog - sorry in advance to all you good honest pet lovers out there.
I would be going the box.
is this to get to them dreaded welch plugs if it is i have a super easier way
No its not a welch plug. I think there is a main oil channel that runs strait through the TD5 from front to back and has threaded plugs requiring an allen key for removal on each end. The front one is under the timing cover and the back one would live directly opposite under the bell housing.
My TD5's welch plugs were all nicely replaced by the machine shop after the resleave and bore.
But only you know your trick ... might be relevant ...
ah bugger that is a definate box removal .
i had a welch plug give way and i was in the middle of no where ,luckily i had my work tools with me i have a 4"battery operated grinder remover center console , and unbolted the main part of dash lifting it up locted approximately where the welch plug was and cut into the fire wall luck i got the right spot first time ,removed the welch plug ,put some stag on it replaced the plug ,and when i got home got a bigger piece of alloy than the hole i cut siliconed and pop riveted it back into place ,very handy inspection plate to have there aswell
You've got a lot of initiative. And I was going to say courage but I suppose once you couple the idea with the necessity you gotta try it.
Bravo and thanks.
I'll vote on Saturday night after I have my gearbox out ...![]()

I pulled the gearbox - having tried the motor and gearbox now I reckon the latter was easiest. Did the right thing then eh? Well no actually. Didn't think the problem right through did I. I mean if the machine shop left the oil plug off under the bell housing what do you think it did with the one under the timing cover? And to get under the timing cover what's the go then ... you guessed it.
This has got to be a record for deja-vu 'repairs'.
