They could be quoting a combined 50 + 50 rating as each rail can take 50kg.
Hi All,
hope you are all doing well. We are planning our first family trip in Sept to SA so I am getting everything organised for the journey and have a couple of questions:
Question 1:
My parents brought down in their last visit a roof pod which is quite large (1.2mt long x 76cm wide which includes the lips + 25-30cm deep depending on what part of the aerodynamic shape you are measuring from incl the U chanels, plastic thingys you can adjust screw them in with and keys.)
I know there are alot of posts on the cross bars of which I have read most of them. But I had a daft question to ask:
The factory default roof rails have a load rating of 50kg's. If the cross bars have a load rating of 100kg's.... is it only 50kgs or 100kgs of 150 kg's of weight that I can put on top??
I have no idea what brand of podbox it is other than the measurements, comes with lock & key and has two gas struts either side. I'm assuming that those things are all standard. I think the pod box is about 8-10 years old.
Question 2:
With the gas struts, they need re-gassing. Does anyone know where you can get these done in Melbourne? I came across a site with some information but can't for the life of me remember the site!!
- found the site LOL: http://www.melbournestruts.com.au/
Thanks for your help... :-D
Cheers,
Lp

Hello :-)
I had a look at the RAVE CD and it showed an icon with 50kg in the accessories section but nothing to state whether that was for one side or both.... but I think it was relating to the factory cross bars as apposed to the roof rails come to think of it!!
I'd be interested to hear how much folk have loaded up weight wise on the factory default roof rails please....
Thanks
Lp
If you value the vehicle 50kgs
On road only you could sneak a few more without much worry, but not much!!!
Racks are for light stuff.
I have a rhino pod quite large as is yours. I have found it quite difficult due to the overall height and it is easy to overload[spacious interior],then again it was sitting on rhino tradies racks----have since purchased alu roof rack with three wide spaced wide feet hopefully to spread the weight more evenly. the rack is to carry extra spare with two tubes 1 for tent poles and other fishing rods & gear---you can also add a water & dust proof collapsable luggage bag, anyway that's my twobobs worth![]()
The manual also notes that off road the rating for the factory roof bars is only 35kg. Remember these are simply bolted to the roof itself. I've done remote trips with both a Thule pod and a collapsible luggage bag but both on gutter mount bars. Found the bag to be the better option as with the zipper on the rear it can be accessed by standing on the rear bar. The pod is a pain trying to balance in the doorway and I wont carry a ladder! Also only use for bulky light stuff.

What if you pressed up a sheet of ally about 100-150mm wide to bolt under the roof and rack mountings and went all the way across and sat in or attched to whatever point you could locate (grab handle mounts?) on the sides. Not trying to reinvent the wheel but could give enough extra support and rigidity for that extra 15kg or so. I know it's a job but you repair the kaftan tent/roof lining at the same time.
Thanks everyone for your replies.
The pod will only be for essential stuff for the 4 kids ... so a couple of folded portacots (18x18x75) + clothes, bottles, formula tins, sleeping bags, nappies, wipes n swim gear so all light stuff - otherwise hubby has now decided he wants to take his FJ40 of which he has the roof rack for.
As for tents and the like... we will be camping it on our next trek where the trailer n hubbys roof rack and the pod will b put to good use otherwise we have all the mod cons of my parents place along the river murray for this stint...
I'm all too familiar with what mum n dad took camping for us when we use to go for 4-6 weeks at a time to the riverland when we were kids - every nook and cranny was full in the boat/cabin, trailer and roof rack ... but then they packed for seven kids not 4 like us - def dont want to be packing as much as that LOL!!!
Cheers
