Alternative use for SLS air compressor

    Hi all,

Had a leak in one of my airsprings (2004 D2), took the opportunity to covert to coil springs with a 2" lift.

Im thinking how great it would be to now reuse the still operational aircompressor for other things eg. tyres, through installing a connection point for a hose somewhere on the vehice.

SO....has anybody done or heard of this being done before? Have searched the site and cant seem to find anything

Have a search, I am pretty sure its only a "Light weight" style compressor with a plastic piston or rings so it wont serve the purpose of continual running for a tyre.

Im sure someone else will be along shortly to back this up, why not put a decent compressor in its place?

    Hi Jimbo,

Shame you removed the air springs! Anyway, now you have some options. If you want to set up the car for touring a good idea is:
    * Replace the SLS compressor (and store it for when you convert back to SLS with a second AGM battery in it's place to run your fridge, and not take up space inside the car or under the bonnet.
    * Install an ARB on board compressor under the drivers seat - fits perfectly if you don't have CD stacker.
    Cheers

I know, it took me a while to decide on the conversion, but there were a couple of reasons for this 1. I wanted a lift and from what I read on here achiving this with the SLS legally in QLD would take a bit of mucking around, of which I dont have time for atm & 2. Potentially doing Cape York at the end of the year and did not want to be left in a sticky situation should the compressor/airbag/s fail in the middle of nowhere. Believe me your internal organs shake on even the smallest bump when the airsprings deflate.

I do like you idea on using the space for a battery though....

I don't know about your "laws" regarding lifting with SLS........but if you had replaced the airbags then they would have been good for a few years more for def, If they are "original" on your 04, then they were in need of replacement anyway "imo". Mine will be swapped every 3 years regardless if they are faulty or not....... and "if" the compressor fails when out on the trails, the airbags can easily be manually inflated anyway......gives a good excuse to fit onboard air

Your ride turns to crap when a coil collapses or breaks too...
Physically seen it happen more than once.

Correct, it is a light weight compressor, not as simple as just plastic bits in it but as we are taking 04 original with air bag failure, and if it has already done average work then it will be due for the scrap heap very soon. Factors like keeping the filter clean etc come into play but they do not last particularly if there has been a leaking bag.

Thanks to all for the replies

So far then Im gathering I shouldnt have done the conversion and I may as well just throw the compressor out?

I have had a suggestion to remove the compressor and mount a second battery in its place.....So are there any other ideas?

I am sure a lot of people would buy the compressor off you for a backup - I would if the price was right.
