    200 000KM'S TD5 Whooshing noise

Please be aware that my 200 000 km TD5 had the exhaust manifold gasket leak due to the rearmost nut un-winding and falling off! So any other 200 + owners might like to check theirs. Be careful trying to tighten any loose nuts as I tried to put one on and the stud was as soft as toffee and just broke off. It was driveable but made a whooshing noise from 2250 to 2750 r.p.m. This seems to be common and cost over $900 and a day in the shop to fix.

Mate, whoever charged you $900 for this is a bloody crook, I've had this job done 3 times, 3rd time it is now fixed for good and combined cost of the 3 jobs is still under $900.

I'd steer clear of that bloke cause he's ripping people off

There is a mod to prevent this from happening again, do a search for "broken exhaust studs" it's a common issue for TD5s

I've had that nut at the back come off as well, god knows for how long it's been gone. Cars done 170000 odd kms. Fingercrossed,, I put another nut on and seems okay. Never had a leak without the nut, just noticed it gone one day when shineing a torch around. $900 is too much, how much of that was labour?

I think about 1/2 was labour but it wasn't just a matter of putting a new nut on, as two others broke so 3 studs had to be removed the hard way, and helicoiled, plus new gasket and all new studs with anti-seize and in an unrelated issue, the turbo hose had blown and needed replacement, also the top hose fitting had corroded, so new one of those, plus coolant system drained, flushed and filled with new coolant ofcourse. I think that's everything, sorry I should've mentioned it all before with the cost.

Same problem & warning to others

My manifold gasket started to leak just as we were heading off for Easter. 201,000 ks on the clock. When I got home did a search found this thread , checked the rear bolt and I'll be $%%#@ the nut is missing . Will find a nut and hope it just pulls up tight without a problem.

Now a perth workshop checked this vehicle over a few weeks back prior to any woosh sound just a tic tic. They told me that I would need a head gasket ,water pump .radiator etc etc etc around $6000 should do it. No mention a simple nut fell off.

    stretched studs

I spoke with Phil from triumph Rover spares in Adelaide aparently they do about 4 of these a week. The manifold warps stretched the stud and the nut comes loose. Try and refit a nut and the stud snaps adding to problems. I have read the rave repair and it doesnt seem to diffucult so will have a go myself. I can get a exchange manifold that has been machined and drilled to relieve stress so it wont warp again.
