Safe working load for roof with Rhino bars for soft roading

    Hi all,

About to do a Straddie trip again - this time no trailer. The GSD in the boot makes it necessary to stick most of the stuff up on the rack. Its a full length rhino mesh rack on 3 rhino bars. Now I know the SFL as specified in the manual is light on, but that seems to be for load pushing down on the factory roof bars, which are straight into the roof itself and someway in from the sides and not on the gutter area (much stronger I would think). The SFL of the Rhino bars is huge and beyond what I need but I imagine that all up the weight up top will be not inconsiderable. Queen thick airless bed, 3 singles in the same config. Double dome tent. 5 camping chairs, tuffer style box about 3 foot long and a foot wide full of fluros and the little stoves, chemical bi-pot dunny and a coleman hot water system. I would also have some empty plastic water bottles but they way bugger all.

I would take it easy around corners, and the off roading is really soft roading because its all sand. Anyone got any feedback about any loads they have carried in a similar configuration to the above? Mine was the pov pack so now stock roof racks bearing any load at all.

    Cheers

Weighed each piece - its more bulk than anything 70kg Max plus the roof bars and mesh basket (by putting tent and esky in the rear, GSD on the tent ). Should be very sweet at that.

    Ozscott,
I wouldn't put anymore weight on the roof at all.
The design limit is for both factory crossbars & gutter mounted crossbars as they were an option in the accessories catalogue. From memory something like 62kg incl. racks etc.
So in that case wouldn't go anymore than what you already have, again this decreases if used in offroad conditions!
The gutter rails arent designed to carry a lot of weight, so just pack all the light gear on the roof & keep the heavy gear inside.

    Cheers.

Thanks Pete. Since posting I searched Discoweb..those guys are pretty mad, but there are a heap of fellas who have carted 350-300 pounds, so over double what I am contemplating with no damage. My bet is that LR did not re-rate for the roof gutter mounts and if they did it was probably 2 bars (I run 3 - so more distribution) and very very conservative. I think as long as you drive to suit it should be sweet at 100kg or under including rack and bars.

    Cheers
