    To grease or not to--

I read somewhere a major reason for no-maintenance items such as our D2 front shafts is the injection of debris when using a grease gun.
I suppose the thinking is 7-8 years is better than only a couple if the joint is regularly "maintained".

How many of us clean the nipples with solvent and use a new adaptor every time?

Not I good sir but my grease gun is sealed in a bag & I covered the nipple in WD40 before hooking up the gun, a good thought though,

No, but I usually get a lot more than eight years out of U-joints! For example, rear propshaft U-Joints on the 2a are at least twenty years old (front ones don't last as long because of the angle). Similar life on the 110 rear prop shaft joints.

The main reason for making things "no maintenance" is mainly to allow increases in maintenance intervals - and increase the reliability of unmaintained vehicles!

I grease the propshafts on my RRC regularly (sometimes monthly). I have not replaced any UJs in the time I have owned it (6 years) and I don't know when or if they had been replaced prior to me owning it.

That's the other question rolling around in my head, has my DC been replaced prior to me owning it. Did any series 2 LR's come out with a serviceable DC?
Mine in specific is a 2000 ES 7 seater & I've got a serviceable DC?

Well, I run a front and rear shaft dc joint, both serviceable and since I've done this all the joints have lasted. I'm i'n the opinion that I run through so much crud it's better pushing it out than maybe letting it penitrate.
I remember a conversation with earthmoving equipment , never grease or always. All the good machines are alwAys greased every morning.
Greasing the front dc stops the air con drip causing havoc
