Arrow Strange noise under the bonnet of TD5 - sounds like a grasshopper

I have an odd one here. I have a strange noise under the bonnet of my 2003 Land Rover Discovery HSE TD5. The noise could best be described as being similair to the noise a grass hopper makes (I think they make that noise by rubbing their wings together or something like that). The noise occurs when the vehicle is off, and even when it hasn't been started in 12 hours. Any ideas?

    Amusing.

I doubt it's a bug as the vehicle has done at least 150km's over the two weeks since I first noticed the noise. I'd be surprised if the bug survived that.

I've had a huntsman holding onto the pop up headlight of my daily driver, he held on for 50km at highway speed. 8 hrs later he paid me a visit inside by walking up the a pillar, scared the living crap out of me.

Do you have any electrical accessories under the bonnet? Could it be a relay clicking on/off - if one is dodgy or has low voltage going to it, they can cut in/out rapidly.

Maybe disconnect the battery & see if the noise stops.

Hey Mat, maybe it's a gay Huntsman & just likes hairdresser cars .

find me one of the marque that will handle like it, have the acceleration and fuel consumption of it and doesn't cost six figures and I'll stop driving my Gay car.

It's the only gay car in the village you know, and I love the feel of it's inside.

Back to the problem at hand, have you installed a duel battery system by any chance?

I have only the original battery in at the moment, I do have a second battery tray fitted, but there isn't a second battery installed yet - there is also currently no wiring for a second battery.

I'll try disconnecting the battery and seeing if it still makes the noise.

My abs module does this too but even when she's turned off. I've read somewhere before this is the cause of alot of LR's flattening their batteries if left unstarted for a few days. Mine is only very quiet though, gotta have the bonnet up & ear pretty close to the module itself to hear it. I think the suggestion was to pull a particular fuse but can't remember which one

Got the same chirping noise here from the vicinity of the ABS module. It's never caused a problem although we have just replaced the battery after 7 years. Anyone know why it chunters away like that?
